Creative Arts News
On the last day of term 3, the Creative Arts faculty joined forces with members of the Multicultural Committee and Languages faculty to present an afternoon full of highlights for our students.
In the first half hour, staff and students alike enjoyed performances from our dance teams, an Erhu (Chinese violin) performance, a martial arts demonstration and more. The final hour was chock full of awesomeness: Jazz Collective and other acts performed in the Amphitheatre; Cleveland's Got Talent drew a big crowd; there was weaving, games to play, food to eat and fun to be had everywhere you went. Congratulations to all staff and students who got involved in a wonderful afternoon of entertainment.

On the 11th and 12th of October, the Creatives Arts department recorded Music Showcase and Dance Fusion. While the magic of performing for a live audience is irreplaceable, our students played and danced their hearts out, and our teachers are immensely proud of their efforts. We are very excited to broadcast these events in the very near future, so keep an eye on our social media pages!

2020 Girls in Science Forum
This free event is for female secondary and tertiary students interested in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) and will be held virtually on Monday 26 October from 2pm – 3pm AEDT.
The 2020 L'Oréal-UNESCO Girls in Science event is a Climate Edition – including a panel of leading female researchers tackling the important issues surrounding climate change. The critical urgency of climate change has meant that our 2020 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Fellows are working within research areas never investigated before. They are helping to solve some of the greatest sustainability challenges currently facing humankind and our natural environment.
The forum provides an opportunity for students to hear from the 2020 Fellows and ask them questions about their research and career path. In a time when COVID-19 has disrupted the school year for many students this event looks to engage with the future generations of ambitious females that we know have a strong passion for science, sustainability and climate action.

Global Competency and Leadership Student Workshop
During the September holidays, Leon Xu, Lily Shannon, Ben Mason, Limkyung Choi, Richard Qin and Zoe Wilson were successfully selected to represent our school at the Global Competency and Leadership Student Workshop for students in Year 10 and Year 11. This workshop was offered by the Global Opportunities (GO) unit within the Queensland Government of Education International (DEi), in partnership with the University of Queensland. This 1-day workshop assisted students with exploring the benefits of global networks, global engagement, and global experiences and opportunities for young people. In addition, the workshop highlighted leadership and leadership skills, as well as how this impacts student’s future employability. Some reflections from the students are as follows:
“Participating in the Global Competency and Leadership Student Workshop was a fresh and fruitful experience to me. It not only provided me with opportunities to explore the idea of globalisation, but also enhanced my leadership capacity and enlarged my vision on my future pathway. I am keen to learn what is beyond the scope of secondary education, and the UQ workshop provided me with such a chance.” – Richard Qin, Year 11IB student
“I have experienced a lot since coming to Australia, but I can proudly say that the Global Competency and Leadership Workshop has been the best and the most productive experience. At UQ, there were 51 Year 10 and Year 11 students from different schools who would like to learn the correct way to perceive the world and expand their thoughts with the mindset of a preceding leader. During the activities, students were encouraged to brainstorm and have discussions of present global issues and solutions, which enhanced my critical-thinking skills and bravery of presenting my thoughts in front of other people and persuading them. Before I attend this workshop, my courage and confidence were low and I didn't have a will and even a thought of changing the world. However, because it made me meet a group of good people who respect others and their perspectives and learn new ways to progress my thoughts, I am motivated to improve myself and for the world. Thanks to the workshop managers and the teachers who let me participate in this fantastic opportunity.” – Limkyung Choi, Year 11IB student.
Online Language Courses
Year 8 student, Xian was successfully selected to participate in the 2020 September Holiday Language Program James Cook University Junior Academy of Modern Languages online course for Japanese. Year 11 student, Zoe Wilson was successful in placement on the September holiday UQ-IML Languages Enrichment Online Course for Japanese. Both students enjoyed this opportunity and are to be congratulated on their commitment to Japanese learning.

Student Council News
Students held their last full Student Council meeting this week. It has been a strange year for our representatives, but a productive one nonetheless. We have held our Aussie BBQ, Valentine roses, Easter raffle, Shave for Cure and Koala Action Group fundraisers. We supported the Redlands RSL by selling the ANZAC badges and participating in the Honour the Fallen – ANZAC Project. This term, we will once again be supporting this great cause by participating in Honour the Fallen for Remembrance Day and attending the Remembrance Day service in Cleveland.
Later this month, we will be working with Chaplaincy fundraising for Bandana Day. We are holding a Gold Coin Day where students can wear their uniform with bandanas, wear red for Daniel or come in free dress. Students who participate pay a gold coin.
This is our last newsletter before our Senior Leaders start their external assessment. The school would like to thank all Senior Leaders: Charlotte Tennant (Student Council President), Ryan Khatri (Student Council Executive Officer), Ruben Grobbelaar (Student Council Public Relations Officer), Habin Son (International Liaison Officer), Trinity Bobnar (School Captain), Haley O’Connor (School Captain), William D’Arcy (School Captain) and Rishen Krishna (School Captain) for doing an outstanding job this year. It has been a privilege to work with these wonderful young adults and we wish them all the best for their future. They will be missed.
Upcoming Events
30 October – Bandana Day – Gold Coin Day
10 November – Honour the Fallen (date may change, waiting on confirmation with RCC)
11 November – Remembrance Day

International Student Program
The CDSHS International Student Program has recently updated the ‘International’ tab of the school website. We are pleased to share testamonials and images featuring current and past students. Many thanks to Ms Martinuzzo who has spent countless hours resetting text and links to make the pages reflect our fantastic CDSHS International Student Program.

Despite Covid restrictions, some of our international students managed to experience the diverse range of environments Queensland has to offer on the recent school holidays. Takato visited Woorabinda in The Outback, Riko went to the Whitsundays and Kim loved bushwalking at the Sunshine Coast. Please enjoy their photos below.

Three of our international students, Limkyung, Richard and Leon, represented CDSHS at the Global Competency and Leadership Student Workshop at the University of Queensland over the September School holidays. The workshop highlighted leadership and leadership skills enriching our international students’ personal profiles to support future university and employment opportunities. Well done, students. Your ability to communicate so effectively in English is outstanding.

Would you like to be a CDSHS homestay family? |
The Cleveland District State High School International Student Program is always recruiting homestay families for both long-term and short-term stay students. A ‘homestay’ is a private home accepting overseas students to live as part of their family. It is not a matter of simply renting out a room in your house. You are effectively the student’s ‘parent’ whilst they are studying at CDSHS. Host families can be an individual, couple or family and preferably located within the school catchment area with easy access to public transport. All members of host families aged 18 years and over require a valid Blue Card for Working with Children and this can be arranged through the school at no cost. CDSHS long-term homestay testimony: ‘Hosting international students from all over the world has enriched our lives forever. Through building strong relationships with young people from different cultural backgrounds we now have the inside gossip on, how to drive a dog sled effectively in the snow in Norway, and where to find the best gelato in Venice! However, homestay is more much more than funny stories. It is an opportunity for young people to become citizens of the world and for our own Australian children to grow tolerance, cultural understanding and acceptance. Put simply, the CDSHS homestay program has been the best part of our own family adventure.’ |
HOST FAMILIES RECEIVE TAX FREE PAYMENT FOR HOSTING BOTH LONG AND SHORT TERM STUDENTS For more information on hosting International Students, please contact our Homestay Coordinator at: claro2@eq.edu.au OR phone the CDSHS ISP office on 3824 9249 |

Senior Schooling
Are you in Year 12, about to leave and unclear what you’re doing next year, OR unsure if your QTAC offer mightn't see you realise your aspirations?
Redmako have put together a program to firstly qualify, then give experience, and ultimately get students employed in an emerging industry set to create more jobs over the next 10 years than any other!
Qualified: 10118NAT Diploma of Social Media Marketing
Experienced: 12 week internship in leading agency or business
Employed: Historically 95% placement rate within 30 days of program completion
This is a 10 month full-time program, delivered in a virtual classroom, so enrolments can be from any location.
With a 1,357% growth in Social Media Marketing positions posted over the last 10 years and this trend only set to increase, this could be the smartest decision your students could make for their next chapter.
Beyond the qualification, the internship is a phenomenal opportunity which is preceded by a comprehensive job readiness program and intra-internship strongly supported via logbooks & weekly interviews. The reality is that most businesses want to hire people who already have some sort of professional experience, so the challenge for all graduates is getting that first opportunity. This program delivers on this opportunity via the 12 week internship being included.
Jobs are booming in the Social Media Marketing sector, which is also driving up expected salaries - both are GREAT reasons why students should consider this program.

Work and Life Skills Enrichment Program for Year 12 Students
The Senior exam block is fast approaching and we are keen to ensure all students are completely up-to-date with their work and assessment items for both school and external providers. Any students who have outstanding assessment will not be permitted to be on leave during this period until ALL items are completed and submitted to a satisfactory standard. A small number of students may also need to revisit past pieces of work at the Dean of Students’ discretion.
For students who are up-to-date with all assessment items, we are offering an exciting opportunity to engage in a Work and Life Skills Enrichment Program to develop skills beyond the classroom. At Cleveland District SHS we are committed to developing young people to achieve their potential intellectually, personally and socially, extending learning, knowledge and curiosity. This program is particularly aimed at students who are up-to-date with their assessment and do not have to attend exams.
During the extended exam block, we are offering a number of different learning experiences for students to engage in through both school and external providers. Through these sessions we will offer face-to-face and online learning experiences. The places in these programs are limited and there may be a small fee to engage with some of these. The program offerings are detailed on the next few pages.
To confirm your child’s place in a face-to-face program, please logon to the parent booking system ( https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code?z=5myqQi )and use the Event Code: 7sbev indicate all sessions that you wish to attend by Thursday 22nd October. Places are limited and may reach capacity. Please note, only eligible students can register for a program (please check the program suitability).

P & C News
The P&C Executive, staff and members would like to wish all Year 12 students well as their high school years come to an end in what has been, no doubt, one of their most challenging years on many levels. Best of luck to all these students as they sit their final exams and look to new adventures in 2021.
Uniform Shop
As the end of 2020 approaches, the Uniform Shop is planning for its busiest period providing the new Year 7 cohort for 2021 with their uniforms and the current Year 9 cohort with their senior uniforms. As with everything this year, the processes will be a little different as compared to previous years. We are working hard to ensure we can still provide excellent and efficient service while adhering to Covid Safe requirements. More details will follow soon, so look out for information on the school Facebook page and in the next newsletter.
Flexischools orders: Please ensure your student picks up their order asap as there are still many orders waiting for pick up instore.
Second-hand items: A reminder we cannot accept second-hand items that are not freshly washed, or that have any rips, stains, or holes.
Second-hand item buy-back: Our merchant supplier has advised us of new restrictions in relation to second-hand payments. We can no longer process payments of second-hand returns over $75 direct to your bank/credit card. If the return is over $75, your name and bank account details will be needed, and a weekly payment run will be conducted.
Layby payment option: If you have a student starting in 2021, you can order items before the end of year using our layby system. The terms are as follows: 15% deposit for a period of up to 90 days, with a $5 non-refundable service fee. This is a great way to help spread the cost out.
Tuckshop
The Tuckshop has new snack options available to provide a little variety when the students need a quick ‘pick-me up’ or if they just want to spend their loose change. Available for $1 are LeSnak (cheese dip and crackers), oat bars and muesli bars and for $1.50 Jatz biscuits and cheese.
No Friday Specials will be available in Term 4 as the Tuckshop begins to wind down, but stay tuned for exciting new and healthy menu options in 2021.
Just a reminder, we request students NOT bring $50 notes to the Tuckshop if possible. While we welcome the business, as the Tuckshop has limited change on hand, it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide change for a $50 note when more than a few students are paying this way in a single day.
Our next general meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 24th November @7pm.
We will keep you updated closer to the time to confirm this meeting will proceed as normal.
