From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Families

It was with great honour that I accepted the role as permanent Executive Principal of Cleveland District State High School, after a recruitment process by the Department of Education, following Mr Paul Bancroft’s retirement.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to share some information with you. The unusual accent you may hear is a result of being born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and then moving to this side of the world when I was eight. So, the accent has undergone some twists and turns. I feel very lucky to have left Ireland in the middle of ‘The Troubles’ to start a new life in Australia. This has shaped my life and explains why I’m so passionate and dedicated to education.

I have worked for the Department of Education (DoE) for 32 years in a number of schools, including four years remote at Normanton P-10, which was a remarkable experience. I’ve had the privilege to be the principal of five schools, most recently, Windaroo Valley State High School, a large school in Logan City, which was my substantive position before coming to Cleveland District. In that role, I line managed South East Region’s instrumental music program which has over 100 staff working with 13 000 students.

I’ve had many terrific opportunities with the DoE which I am very proud of as they’ve improved educational outcomes for students. These include being part of the Flying Start pilot program and the Queensland 1-to-1 Lighthouse project, which was when I had the chance to work with some of the wonderful staff from Cleveland District. My leadership in Flying Start achieved a Queensland State Finalist for the Showcase Awards in 2015. I have also been successful in winning two federal government grants with an investment of $100 000, one STEM based, ‘Fuels for the Future’ and the other ‘Success for Boys’. I led both of these projects with six other schools. The success of these projects was recognised with both being selected, from projects across Australia, to be showcased on the Australian Curriculum Corporation’s website as best practice. I have a special interest in STEM and received an award for embedding effective practice with technology in education from the Premier.

My qualifications include a Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education. I’ve continued to study and achieved a Graduate Diploma of Management specialising in operational and financial planning and organisational efficacy. I completed my Master of Education by research with my thesis focussing on methodologies to improve the reading skills of high school students, including students who are ‘at risk’ from poor reading skills. Two years ago, I graduated from a Master of Business Administration (MBA), specialising in strategic organisational leadership, governance and people development. I am very proud that I won the Dean’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in this course.

Since 2016, I have been the principal representative on the State Council of Queensland Secondary Principals’ Association (QSPA). Prior to arriving at Cleveland, I was the Co-Chair of the Enable Network of the fourteen high schools in Logan City, which is a substantial intentional collaboration initiative. In 2017, I presented some of the success from this collaboration of schools at the Australian Council for Educational Research ‘Excellence in Professional Practice Conference’. In 2019, I was a keynote speaker at the ENABLE ‘50 000 Futures’ Conference held at Griffith University, Nathan Campus, and also that year presented at the Queensland Schools Constitutional Convention. I am currently on the Queensland Global Perspectives Board, overseeing the strategic and governance of a large scale, multi-million-dollar project, across the state. Additionally, I sit as a member of Queensland’s Teacher Education Industry Advisory Group shaping education pre-service programs.

One of my career highlights was being selected to run a program for 60 aspiring leaders across Queensland over two years. I am passionate about people development and working with this group was very rewarding. I have also presented at two Queensland Principal Induction SIMposiums, working with newly appointed school leaders. I am a member of both the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL) and the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) which provides avenues for leadership and professional development which I often share with staff.

It is a privilege to be the new principal at Cleveland District State High School. I look forward to contributing to the school’s journey and building on the significant leadership of Paul Bancroft which positioned our school as a flagship school in Queensland. I look forward to partnering with the community to ensure we prepare students to meet the future.

Celebrating Student Success

Huge congratulations to Sophie Colley and Susmita Rana who have been shortlisted for 1 of 5 positions at Redlands Hospital.  Sophie and Susmita were selected from a very large applicant pool after completing a rigorous application process that included both written and video submissions.  They  now progress to the next stage of the interview process in the coming weeks.  We wish them luck in their endeavours!

Congratulations also goes to Madeline Miles who was successful in acquiring a full scholarship of over $2000 offered by Ramenko for the Diploma of Business.  Madeline completed a written application process where she described  what the completion of the Business Diploma means for her future.  Many of our students applied for the scholarship and the calibre of the submissions was incredibly high. Well done, to all of the applicants and congratulations, Maddie.

The Walk for Hope - Vanuatu Fundraiser 23 June

Our 12th annual Walk for Hope will be held during school hours on Wednesday 23 June. This is our main fundraiser for supporting our school’s work in Vanuatu. The current travel ban has hit Vanuatu hard as a large proportion of their GDP comes from tourism, so we have redoubled our efforts to help them. In May, over 250 volunteers met to create ten libraries as part of The Library Project - Vanuatu. The funds raised through our Walk for Hope will help to ship a container filled with these libraries to severely impoverished schools. By participating in, and donating to our walk-a-thon, you are helping us to bring the hope of a brighter future to many ni-Vanuatu children living in poverty.

The Walk for Hope is a two-part challenge.

Firstly, we are challenging students to walk as many laps as they can in one hour; to see if collectively they can walk the distance from our school to our Sister School in Pango, Vanuatu.

Secondly, every student is challenged to raise $5 or more to help children living in poverty. Everyone who meets these challenges will receive tickets that will allow them to claim prizes from the Walk for Hope Shop.

In addition, our donors also stand to win! For every $5 given, donors go in a draw to win an amazing Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus valued over $325.

We encourage all students to participate, raise a few dollars and, make a difference in the lives of children living in poor communities in Vanuatu. For details or to donate, please speak to school chaplains Neale or Sarah..

High Performance Learning News

Debating:

The Year 8 – 12 debating season is quickly drawing to a close and all of our teams have made Cleveland District State High School extremely proud! Most recently, team 8.2 won against Moreton Bay Boys’ College, team 9.1 defeated Cannon Hill Anglican College and, the Year 11 team (pictured below) beat St Philomena School.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our students in all of their debates so far this year! It has been wonderful to hear the great feedback from the adjudicators and it has been an absolute joy to watch the confidence of our debaters grow. We are looking forward to seeing how our Year 7s go in their debating season which begins soon!

Brisbane Writers’ Festival:

Each Monday until the 14th of June during ICARE, interested HPL students are attending Brisbane Writers’ Festival online sessions. Whilst we are sad that COVID has impacted the usual in-person school sessions that the Festival runs, this alternate arrangement has meant more students than ever have been able to engage with the fantastic authors who are presenting!

So far, students have listened to Lisa Fuller, author of Ghost Bird, talk about the significance of being able to represent her culture in her writing and the importance of engaging with community when telling stories. They have also attended a session with Matt Okine, author of Being Black ‘n Chicken & Chips, who discussed the power of owning and telling your story, as well as how humour can help us through the difficult times in life.

Over the next two weeks, students will also attend sessions with Garth Nix, Wai Chim, and slam poets, Miles Merrill and Narcisa Nozica. We are excited to see what our budding writers do next with the knowledge they have gained!

School-Based Youth Health Nurse Health News - Vapping

The increasing popularity of inhaling e-cigarettes, known as vaping, has led to questions and concerns around the health impacts – especially for young people.

Vaping refers to the use of an electronic device (e-cigarette) to heat liquids and produce a vapour, which is then inhaled – mimicking the act of smoking.  While the extent of the harm is not yet clear, evidence suggests that vaping is not risk-free.

This  mini-bulletin has been developed by The Alcohol and Drug Foundation to help parents, and those working with young people, understand the issues and potential risks of e-cigarette use.

It covers:

  • what is vaping?
  • what are the established harms?
  • vaping in Australia
  • vaping amongst young people
  • having a conversation with young people.

Creative Arts Ambassadors Update

Our Creative Arts Ambassadors have developed a mission statement inspired by the concept of 'wellness every week'; acknowledging the joy received from their participation in the Arts.  Their mission is to spread the joy of Creative Arts throughout our school community.  The Ambassadors have brainstormed ideas and, are aiming for weekly Creative Arts activities at lunchtime for the whole school to enjoy.  So far this term, the Ambassadors have; organised a Guitar Workshop for Year 7 and 8 students run by Senior Music students, a Printmaking workshop for budding artists and, have produced had a series of lunchtime performances by our talented Year 10 Music students.  It was great to see the Senior students mentoring the Juniors during the Guitar workshop – and the Junior students asking for more!  The Printmaking workshop linked in with Reconciliation Week and, used some beautifully themed images. Students, assisted by Senior Art students and Miss Glover, really enjoyed learning new techniques for printmaking with eucalyptus oil. Coming up, we are looking forward to Karaoke at the Amphitheatre (a huge hit last term) and, a Talent Show in the Performance Space.  Stay tuned for more fun events organised by our Creative Arts Ambassadors to spread the joy of the Arts!

Photos: Lunchtime Guitar and Printmaking Workshops organised by the Creative Arts Ambassadors

Reconciliation Week

The Creative Arts Faculty contributed to our school’s important Reconciliation Week celebrations from 24-28 May.  Our Visual Art students created stunning posters which decorated our school. The Creative Arts Ambassadors, assisted by our Tech Crew, organised a lunchtime celebration of music by creating a playlist of inspiring songs on themes of unity and healing which had students dancing and relaxing at the Amphitheatre.  2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal Reconciliation process. We all have a role to play when it comes to Reconciliation, and in doing so collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and futures.  The Creative Arts faculty were very pleased to contribute towards marking such an important milestone and,  are excited for a future of action building a brighter Australia for all.

Friday Frenzy

In many schools, the corridors are quickly emptied on a Friday afternoon but, at Cleveland District SHS, the passion for the Arts continues with a hive of extra-curricular Arts activities.  On Friday afternoons, visitors to the Performing Arts block will hear our Percussion Ensemble rehearsing under the direction of Mr Ashley Higgins; competing with the amplifiers of our Rock School rehearsing with Mr Aaron Andrews.  Both musical groups work towards public performance opportunities, with our Rock School performers recently presenting some classic tunes at a lunchtime concert to entertain our school community.  Our Percussion Ensemble will be performing at the Concert on the Green on June 20, and will be a show-stopper as always!

Also working on Friday afternoons are our Senior Acting Extension students, rehearsing energetically under the guidance of Mrs Skye Strand.  The Senior Acting Extension students have been working hard to develop scenes from the play, “Wendy and Peter”, for our Creative Arts Showcase coming up in Term 3.  Auditions have been held, roles cast and, rehearsals are well underway.

You know students are keen when they want to stay back on Friday after school!

Year 12 Visual Art

Year 12 Visual Artists are working hard completing their second internal assessment for 2021. These students have shown creativity, passion and leadership in the creation of their final year’s folio. This unit is called, ‘Art as Knowledge’, and explores how artists use deep knowledge and experiences to inform their practice. Year 12 artists are expected to create in a self-guided manner and develop an entire body of work across their final year of school. Through this folio, students address an inquiry in any theme, focus and media of their choosing. This year, students have strived for success across a range of media, with our new pottery wheel being a highlight for some students in the creation of their folio.

CAST Parent Support Meeting

On Thursday May 20, we held our first Creative Arts Support Team (CAST) meeting for the year.  This was an opportunity for parents to meet some of our staff and discuss ways in which we can all provide additional support for our Creative Arts students, primarily through fund raising to assist with the purchase of costumes, instruments, etc.  Thank you to all the parents who came along and indicated their willingness to assist at various events throughout the year.  If you missed the meeting, but would like to be involved please email our Head of Department, Mr Simon Watson on swats176@eq.edu.au

Student Point of View: Chiara Thomson

Hey everyone!

My name is Chiara Thomson, one of the Senior Creative Arts Ambassadors at Cleveland District State High School! I have been here since Day 1 of year 7 and enjoyed every minute of the Creative Arts programs Cleveland High offers. I take Year 12 Drama and Visual Art and, I am also a part of the Senior Dance Team and Musical Theatre Troupe. As an extracurricular activity, I am a part of the Year 12 Acting Ensemble at Queensland Theatre.

Currently in Art we are working on our final resolved pieces after researching and experimenting with materials and contexts. The unit we are studying is 'Art as Knowledge'; exploring how new knowledge and research leads to innovative ideas and a change in our inquiries. I have researched feminist movements from the 70’s to today to gain insight to women’s empowerment and freedom. I have experimented with materials such as, acrylic paint, gold leaf, watercolour and inks. I have also experimented with eucalyptus print making and jelly block print making. I have thoroughly enjoyed this unit!!

In Drama at the moment, we are studying Contemporary Theatre in a Greek context. We have been exploring the storyline of ‘Medea’- a Greek tragedy based on the relationship between Jason and Medea. This story features themes of justice, envy, exile and roles of men and women. Our task is to recontextualise this outdated play and transform it into a modern-day play for a current audience. I am thinking of setting my version of the play in a 1970’s high school setting, with Jason playing an extroverted high school 'jock' and Medea being an art student - very creative and introverted. Later in the year, some of the Year 12’s will perform their pieces in the FAMED night as part of this showcase of our classwork.

For Showcase in Term 3, the theme is Peter Pan! The Senior Dance Team is currently working on a piece inspired by Captain Hook being the ‘bad guy’. In Musical Theatre Troupe, we have just finished an item about the 'lost children' in Peter Pan. It explores how the 'lost children' are excited for when they grow up and do adult things; a bit of a spin on the original Peter Pan.  I am so thrilled to be participating in these numbers at Showcase! I am also really looking forward to Dance Fusion and FAMED night towards the end of the year!!

International Student Program

It’s been a lean year for the International Student Program due to COVID-19. Even so, we have been working closely with the team at Education Queensland International (EQI) to promote our CDSHS program for when the borders eventually open (hopefully) in the not too distant future.

Recently, EQI orchestrated a Virtual Agent Tour providing schools with a platform to promote their programs, facilities and community. This was a major logistical endeavour with over one hundred agents from across the world logging in to the live session on the 19th of May. Cleveland District State High School received excellent feedback from both the agents and EQI staff with one agent even asking, ‘Am I too old to enrol?’.

Congratulations to Limkyung Choi (South Korea - CDSHS International Student Liaison Officer), Kim Tran (Vietnam), Leon Xu (China) and Olivia Chissell (CDSHS School Captain) who joined Mr McKeown, Mr Mitchell and Mrs Hendy-Moman to spruke the excellent qualtities of our school. At the conclusion of the session, our CDSHS students stayed online for a further 20 minutes to respond to inpromptu questions from the agents. This extended question time is a testament to the high qualtiy of our presentation. Special mention goes to Olivia for her outstanding narration of our virtual school tour.  Click the link to check it out!

Please enjoy the screen capture images of our live virtual tour. Each student was presented with a certificate acknowledging their exceptional leadership and presentation skills.

Recently, our Japanese Language staff and students organised for an authentic obento lunchbox experience at school. As a senior student, Richard (from China) was part of the event organisation. In this image we see Richard serving Owen (from China) his lunch.

Congratulations to Kim Tran (Vietnam), Gurkirt Singh (CDSHS Student Council Public Relations Officer) and Olivia Chissell (CDSHS School Captain) who recently presented to the Rotary Club of Cleveland on the topics, 'My Australian Experience’ and, ‘What makes my school great’. All three students represented our school brilliantly; demonstrating outstanding communication skills and, were complimented by the Rotarians for their presentation focus. In our next newsletter article, we will highlight Kim’s ongoing experience with the Rotary Club of Cleveland.

You might wonder why we include so many images in our newsletter article. Communication with natural families in home country is paramount to ensuring we build communication and trust across such a great expanse of distance and time; especially during COVID-19 when our students have not been able to travel home for the holidays. This newsletter article is forwarded to natural families who look forward to seeing photos of their children studying at CDSHS.

“As a host Mum, I really enjoy having another young person in our home and welcoming their friends. I am always very aware of the great trust placed in me and our family to provide a safe, secure and happy environment, and I enjoy the special bond that often comes with sharing such a significant adventure at an important time in their life.

I love that their presence encourages us to get out and about and enjoy our beautiful natural environment in South East Queensland and try to ensure that the student gets the most out of their adventure in Australia. We usually do a number of day trips – either to the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Northern New South Wales or inland. If we are going on holidays, we like to share that with our students as well.

I'm in awe of the courage and enthusiasm these students have in their journey half way around the globe; they bring a different and broader perspective into our family life and home; they introduce us to different cultures, habits and beliefs which has been good for my own children and we enjoy sharing a genuine Aussie life with them.

There is no doubt that this has provided us with life-long friends – not only the students but their families as well.

CDHS provides excellent support to both students and host families; the orientation sessions are good, information is clear and support is ongoing during the year for both the host family and the students.

This is definitely an experience I would recommend to anyone considering it.”

HOST FAMILIES RECEIVE TAX FREE PAYMENT FOR HOSTING BOTH LONG AND SHORT TERM STUDENTS

Year 7 Student Point of View

As the semester has been drawing to a close we thought it would be good to see how our new cohort of Year 7 Creative Arts students have enjoyed their first semester of high school.  This is what some of them had to say:

Hugo, 7MCB: I have enjoyed making new friends and it was really fun playing instruments in Creative Arts.

Savannah 7PLB: I most enjoyed the fact that in Creative Arts it’s fun and not boring!

Neha, 7RLD: I enjoyed making new friends and extending on my knowledge, particularly by playing new pieces and composing my own composition.

Anakin, 7RLB: I like that I have nice teachers and I enjoy making music.

Isabella, 7MRD:  I have enjoyed being a part of the musical theatre troupe, and my favourite part of Creative Arts is Drama.

Gabrielle, 7PLC: I have enjoyed playing music with my friends in my Creative Arts class.

Morgan 7MCC: I have really enjoyed the wide variety of extra-curricular activities.

Tim, 7RLA: I have most enjoyed playing music on Wednesdays in Creative Arts and doing concert band and drumline.

One Year 7 student, when asked what her start to high school would have been like without all the activities in the Creative Arts program said, “it would have been lonely”.

We are glad to create an Arts community for our students so that they experience a sense of belonging and fun – we hope all the Year 7 students have had a good start to high school.

Date Claimers:

Next term will be a hive of activity as we prepare for our Creative Arts Showcase. This involves two key dates for your diaries:

Weekend Rehearsal for Creative Arts Showcase – Sunday, August 22

All students will be required for a Sunday rehearsal in the week before Showcase.  A note will be sent home early next term, but please save the date!

Creative Arts Showcase – Friday, August 27

With a Peter Pan theme, this year’s Creative Arts Showcase features performances from all our Drama, Dance, Music Theatre, Choral and Instrumental Music students, with art works and set design by our Visual Art and Media students.  Stay tuned for more information in Term 3!

Jazz on the Green – Sunday, September 12

Concert on the Green

On Sunday June 20, audiences were treated to an afternoon of music at the CDSHS Amphitheatre.  Families and friends bought picnic blankets and baskets and, enjoyed hearing performances from all of our Instrumental and Choral ensembles. Blue skies and sunshine, plus the beautiful music made this a lovely event particularly special as it was our first opportunity for a public performance in 18 months.   Thank you to our wonderful music community of parents and friends who came along to support this event and to help us with our fund-raising efforts.  Special thanks to all our music students, Instrumental Music staff and our Tech Crew for making the concert such a success.

The P&C Executive, Staff and Members wish all a safe and enjoyable winter break.

It has been a busy first Semester for the Tuckshop and the Uniform Shop as the school population grows. Another business has now been added under the P&C umbrella with the opening of the Coffee Kiosk at the PBC providing coffee to the CDSHS staff and senior students, daily. Our Baristas have been busy learning the regular orders and the P&C thanks all those who are supporting this business.

UNIFORM SHOP

Winter Uniform – We have now sold out of warm Fleecy tops sizes 12 – M, and will not have any more available in these sizes this winter. Track pants, track jackets, black pants and knitted jumpers are still available.

Flexischool Orders – Please remember, if you place an order before 3.30pm we will receive it the same day, if it is after 3.30pm we will not receive it until the following afternoon. Once submitted and accepted by flexischools, you will receive a confirmation email (you may need to check your spam or junk email folders if you can’t find it, if you still don’t have one, please check your online flexi order as it may still be sitting waiting for submission).  We can still help with urgent orders if you give your student a copy of the confirmation email to bring into us.

Layby – Always available in store only. Please come in and talk to us if you are unsure.  We do a minimum $45 layby with a $5 service fee and 15% deposit.  So do come in and see us.

Second-hand clothing – We currently have a large volume of small sizing (8-12) boys’ shorts, so if you need some now is a great time to come in. For the moment, we will not be accepting more of these due to oversupply.  We are still low on sport and winter gear, so if you have any, please bring them in.

Parents/ Caregivers – You are still required to sign in on the COVID register on arrival, we have a QLD QR code available on the door and inside the store. Also, in keeping with COVID safe requirements, no stock is to be handled except by staff before it has been purchased so we ask that you do not help yourself to stock on shelves.

TUCKSHOP

Winter is our busiest period in the Tuckshop with hot food on the menu for most students. The Tuckshop staff have been working very hard to keep up with demand and with the additional snack line now selling garlic bread. The queues have been spread out and hopefully moving a little faster.

We are still seeing students presenting $50 notes at the Tuckshop. While we do our best to serve all students, it becomes very difficult to provide change for a $50 note when it happens regularly. We ask that you please provide smaller denominations if your student pays with cash.

NEXT P&C GENERAL MEETING

The next scheduled general P&C meeting is on Tuesday July 27th 2021 @ 7pm in the Innovation Centre F9 - F10 located behind the language block. Entry is via Russell Street.
