Principal's Report

Dear Families

As we approach the end of term, I want to thank you for your substantial support of our school. As a school community, we have faced significant health, welfare, financial and educational challenges over the past three months. It has been a time of enormous stress for many families. Yet, with your support and assistance, we have managed to ensure students at our school have been able to continue with a quality education.

With the great progress that our state and country has made, we look forward to new guidelines being implemented that would allow us to reintroduce many of the activities and routines that both students and staff have missed.

Last newsletter, I announced the terrific news that we were named the Champion School for the 2019 South East Queensland Metropolitan Finals. I’m very proud to let you know that we achieved a remarkable position in the 2020 Language Perfect World Champions. We were placed in the top 5% of 2,155 schools who competed worldwide! This outstanding success reflects the world-quality of education at our school.

I wish students, families and staff a very safe vacation.

This ensures the students can hear what tertiary education is like and be mentored to help prepare them for the next step after high school. If students have further questions about AYAF or AYAA, they can go to:

Year 6 into 7 Academic Excellence Testing

Cleveland District State High School has a proud tradition of Preparing Students to Meet the Future.  One of the ways we do this is to provide opportunities for students to excel in their chosen pathway.  For students who are extremely motivated and achieve high academic results, we provide an Academic Excellence Program in Year 7 which leads into an Intensive Academic Pathway in Senior, with students selecting general ATAR subjects or the International Baccalaureate Diploma.  The aim of the Year 7 program is to provide these students with learning experiences which challenge their thinking and ensure they have engaging opportunities to bring out their academic best.  Places in this program are limited and are awarded to the students who perform well in the entrance exams, combined with positive effort and behaviour comments on their report cards from their primary school.  These exams are open to families both within and out of our catchment area.

This year, we are using Edutest to administer and assess our entrance exams.  Edutest is an Australian educational assessment organisation that provides quality assessments and services to over 100 independent and government schools around the country.  Their team provides thorough diagnostic testing and reporting feedback to parents and students.

The test will take place on Saturday, 29 August at 9am.  It will assess students against a range of skills in numeracy, literacy, reading comprehension and writing.  Families who wish to apply for a place for their student in the Year 7 Academic Excellence program in 2021 are required to register their student for the entrance exam via the following link and pay the $75 fee (plus GST):  https://aus.edutest.com.au/D/?t=E7PL1TUF

Registrations close 21st August, once registered we will be in touch with further details about the organisation of the day, in particular, the COVID safe plan we will have in place.  If your student would like to prepare themselves for the test, please visit the Edutest website for practice tests:  https://www.edutest.com.au/pa-online.htm

This year, we are pleased to announce that we will award scholarships to the students whose results place them in the top five participants.  The scholarships will cover the annual cost of the Student Resource Scheme for 2021.

Semester One Reporting

Semester One reports will be completed and emailed for students in Years 11 and 12 by the end of Week 1, Term 3 and Years 7-10 at the start of Week 2, Term 3.  These reports will reflect the modified nature of some assessment items across year levels and faculties and will encompass the face-to-face and remote learning that has taken place in what was a challenging semester for staff and students!  To ensure that you do not miss out on receiving your student’s report card, please make sure that your email address is up-to-date on our system.  If you need to update your contact details, please contact the Administration Office.  We encourage all families to sit down together and go through the achievement levels and comments on the report card to reflect on Semester One and make learning goals for Semester Two.  We will advise when parent-teacher interviews are able to be held according to Health Department and Education Queensland regulations.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Enrolment Information for 2021

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is another pathway for our students who wish to pursue academic excellence and university study post-Year 12.  Traditionally, we would hold a student and parent information evening early in Term 3.  With meetings such as these on hold for the moment, we will begin by reviewing academic achievement from Semester One reports and invite Year 9 students who are interested in finding out more about the program to find out more during a Friday Access lesson early next term.  Students can then share this information with their parents and further information will be posted on our school website and FaceBook page.  We are excited to be offering a new subject to the IBDP in 2021 – Psychology.  This popular subject typically scores well in final IB assessments and is enjoyed by the students who undertake it.  If you are not a current family of our school but are interested in finding out how your student can become part of this rewarding program, please check out our website or contact the Administration Office.

Why Study Media Arts in Practice?

CDSHS offers Media Arts in Practice as an Applied Subject from Year 9-12.  This subject offers something different to the two courses it sits in between (Visual Art and Film), as students will experience a variety of art-making processes.  These include photography, graphic design, animation, game creation, video and audio editing, web development/design and more.

Students who study Media Arts in Practice develop a set of real-world skills which will help them in future careers, even if those careers are not specific to the subject.

Creative Arts Update

Year 8 Creative Arts students have been honing their skills in preparation for their Visual Art task later in the unit.  They will be creating their own creature characters.  To prepare for this, they have been practising their sketching skills by drawing baby Groot.  Great job, Year 8!

Year 11 Music in Practice students have been hard at work improving their skills as performers.  The current task involves a viva voce, which is essentially a discussion between student and teacher regarding their technical work.  In this case, this revolved around scales and arpeggios performed by the students on guitar, piano or violin.  The students then performed either solo or in small groups, and have done a great job considering the challenges we have faced this term!

Year 12 Media Arts in Practice students have been creating games or animations relating to our local Indigenous culture.  The animations have included such skills as keyframe animation and rotoscoping, both of which involve drawing for approximately 24 frames a second.  This kind of work requires incredible patience and perseverance!  Other students have chosen to create a game, and there are some fantastic examples, including language games for Jandai, the language of Quandamooka Country (our local area), and other games based on traditional stories.  Our Year 12s have been a credit to the school with their dedication to this work.

Year 10 Dance began studying Ballet during isolation. They did a fantastic job of learning and demonstrating mime gestures, along with the positions of the feet and arms, while working at home. Thankfully, they have now been able to come back to school and perfect their technique in preparation for their Ballet exam.

A wonderful day for all involved!

International Student Program

As term two ends, we say a sad farewell to our wonderful International students, some of whom have been here for an entire year. CDSHS wishes Aldo, Alvaro, Danial, Emil, Emma, Hung, Pietro and Stella the best of luck with their continuing studies in their home countries. We commend the mature way in which you handled every single curveball COVID-19 threw your way, including the cancellation of some of your EQI adventures to the Outback and Melbourne. Your resilience is impressive but most of all, your ability to maintain a positive outlook and sense of humour under challenging circumstances is something our school community will never forget. We will miss you terribly and encourage you to stay in touch. The students have selected the following photographs (shown below) as their favourite images from their Australian experience. COVID-19 aside…we think they made the most of their time!

Congratulations to the International Student Ambassador team who recently conducted a photoshoot to promote our international program. The photos look incredible! This team of students are progressively working on a plan to support our Study Tour program when it recommences in 2021. Currently, the students are working on building a cultural awareness program to deliver to international ‘Buddies’ who will host future international students in their classes.

To our continuing long stay Graduate Program students, we wish you and your Homestay families a very happy mid-year break.

Cultural Appreciation in Languages - Itadakimasu! Bon appetite! Chi!

This term, our Junior Languages students studied a ‘Food’ Unit.  With assessment complete, Languages teachers have taken the time to arrange for cultural lessons to incorporate some food tastings.  In Japanese, students experienced Green Tea Ceremony (Sadou) and tasted a variety of green tea including macha, genmaicha and sencha. French students had the opportunity to try a range of cheeses, pate, baguettes, croissants and crepes.  Finally, to tie in with this week’s celebration of Chinese Dragon Boat Festival, Chinese students tasted rice dumplings (zong zi) wrapped in bamboo leaves and Chinese Buddha Tea (tie guan yin).  Students were amazed by the beautiful fragrance of these dumplings and were most appreciative of this opportunity.

STEM Girls Leadership Workshop

On the afternoons of Monday 15 and Wednesday 17 June, our Year 10 Girl Power STEM Ambassador Jemma Griffin was invited to participate in the STEM Girls Leadership Workshop with two friends – Bella Meirswa and Jaleyna Ferrer.  The workshop was conducted remotely using the platform iSee, which allowed the girls to collaborate with others from all over the state, to prepare a response to the “Blue Ocean Youth Design Challenge” hosted by Young Change Agents.  Each of the girls was assigned to a team to identify a problem and prototype a solution in response to this year’s National Science Week theme, “Deep blue: innovations for the future of our oceans”.

Over the course of two afternoons, the teams brainstormed and researched about problems and designed innovative solutions to issues like oil spills, marine debris and fisheries sustainability, and then shared their prototypes in a conference-style presentation session.  The teams will go on to further develop their ideas, for presentation at an event during Science Week in August.

We can’t wait to see where their ideas end up!

Beyond Broncos Girls Academy

We are very excited to welcome two new student support officers. Beryl Friday will work with our academy students Monday to Wednesday and Sarah Shelper will work with students Wednesday to Friday. In term 3 we will welcome Beyond Broncos teacher Kristina Berrigan-Lacey. These additional support staff will be wonderful assets to have supporting our students.

The term 4 workshop topic, “Coping with change in challenging times,” was well received. Students brainstormed many strategies under the keeping active, giving, connecting and paying attention.  Resilience was also explored with Matt Gillett sharing his resilience strategies after he broke his neck in 2018.  Congratulations to the many students who received rewards for over 90% attendance this term. We are looking forward to further good attendance term 3. With the Year 12s getting ready for transitioning into the world beyond school we will have plenty of guest speakers to share about some of the options available. Have a lovely, well deserved break. We certainly have learnt to cope with challenging times in term 2.
