From the Principal's Desk

We’ve had a number of events and celebrations of success since our last newsletter. I’d like to highlight some of these for you. Many other events are celebrated in this newsletter.
Jandai
I’m very proud to announce, that after two years of negotiation, we have been endorsed by the Elders (The Minjerribah-Moorgumpin Elders-in-Council Aboriginal Corporation) to offer Jandai, the local Aboriginal language, as a subject in our Languages Program for Year 7 in Semester 2. This is a significant initiative for our school as we’ll be one of only a few schools who offer a traditional First Nations language as a subject on our time table.
This week we received the news that we won a $20 000 grant from the State Government after a submission earlier in the year to support our introduction of Jandai. These funds will be well utilised to deliver a high quality and engaging program for students. This means that our school will now offer four languages to students on arrival in Year 7 which is an important advantage to our students.
New Tuckshop, Outdoor Seating Area and Engagement Centre
The official sign off of our new build has taken place and we are now in discussions with the successful contractor to start work. This is a very exciting addition to our campus facilities and I appreciate the support of our P and C to achieve this.
Student Success
I’d like to recognise a number of students that have achieved terrific results recently.
International Science School Success
Vanessa Feng and Alex Yin (both Year 11) were successful with their applications for the highly competitive International Science School, which is being run online from 2-10 July this year. Only 150 Year 11/12 students from across the world are selected, with only 10 students from Queensland so this is a very special achievement.
UQ Winter Biology School
Congratulations to Emily Pack, Year 11, who has been selected for a place in the UQ Winter Biology School. This is a well sought-after experience and will be a terrific opportunity for Emily.
Australian Volleyball
Well done to Kayla Cantrill, Year 11, who was recently selected to attend a volleyball trial in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport. From this, Kayla has been selected to represent Australia as part of the Women’s U18 Australian volleyball team. Kayla will play in a number of international competitions later this year. We wish her all the best.
Earthwatch
It gives me great pleasure to let you know that Isabelle Miller (Year 12) has won a scholarship for the Earthwatch program in the upcoming holidays. Previously, I recognised that Courtney Taylor (Year 12) had gained a position. Earthwatch decided to expand the program and only took an extra 8 students out of 1000 applications. So, a fantastic result for Isabelle.
U15s Girls Australian Rules Football
In May we had five of our students (Sierra Douglass 9RLB, Harlee McIlwain 9PLB, Kirra Phelan 10MCC, Rydah Finney 9MCD and Mia Tempest 9PLC) representing the region at the U15 Australian Rules State Titles. I’m thrilled to say that two of these players, Rydah and Mia, have been named in the Queensland side, and another student, Harlee has been named as a shadow. The regional team finished second overall, which was the best result the region has achieved in the Women's AFL comp since its inception. I’m also pleased to let you know that the boys regional team finished fourth and Daniel Annable 10MCA has being named in the State team. Well done to these students.
National Trampolining
Charlie Ebbstein and Hudson Brown, both from Year 8, competed in the Australian Trampolining Championships. In the synchronised event Charlie achieved 2nd place which is a tremendous outcome. Hudson won silver in the Under 15 International category and Bronze in the Double Mini event. A terrific outcome for them both.
Channel 10’s Ultimate Classroom
Congratulations to Jaleyna Ferrer and Jemma Griffin (both Year 12) who have been selected as contestants in the Channel 10 TV show. The filming is in July and as you can imagine Jaleyna and Jemma are very excited about the opportunity. We look forward to hearing how the event went.
Staff Success
Congratulations to Jason Kitchener who has been awarded the South East Region 2022 NAIDOC Indigenous Education Worker of the year award. This is tremendous recognition for Jason’s significant role in our school and community to support students and families.
I wish students a very successful end to the term with their studies.

Languages Cluster Day 2022
On Monday 30th of May, our school was excited to host the annual Languages Cluster Day whereby 100 students from our feeder primary schools experienced a taste of language and culture. The day involved multiple interesting and fun activities surrounding French, Chinese and Japanese, as well as performances by the Confucius Institute QUT dancers, Kung Fu master and our Cleveland High senior students. All of the activities were eventful and engaging, involving Chinese calligraphy and mask painting, Japanese origami and hachimaki making and French paper cutting and Eiffel Tower creations. The students were all very insightful and eager to participate in this learning experience, and even the seniors who volunteered to help out had fun getting along with the up-coming high schoolers of 2023. Thank you to all students and our amazing Languages teachers in our cluster for facilitating an enriching day celebrating language and culture.

Australian Mathematics Competition
The Australian Mathematics Competition is an Australia-wide competition open to students from Years 3 to 12 and is one of the largest in the world. It aims to create, encourage and sustain interest in the study of mathematics. It was established in 1978 and currently has approximately 600,000 participants, making it the world’s largest mathematics competition.
The competition will be held on Thursday the 4th August 2022.
Students gain external recognition of their achievements by receiving certificates and reports showing how they performed compared to their peers. These certificates can be included in resumes. There is no cost to participate in the competition.
Numbers are limited so please get in early to avoid disappointment. Entry/consent forms can be collected from the Maths Staff Room (V block) and must be returned by the 23rd July 2022.
International Student News
This term, we congratulate year 11 IB student Vanessa Feng (international student from China) and fellow IB student Alex Yin who continue to excel in the sciences. Vanessa and Alex have been awarded a place in the International Science School through the University of Sydney. From 2-10 July this year, 150 top year 11-12 science students from across Australia and around the world will gather online for the Prof Harry Messel International Science School. Following online lectures, the students will break out into teams to complete experiments, work through issues, and solve problems. Vanessa and Alex will also go on virtual lab tours through some of the University’s amazing research facilities. Congratulations, Vanessa and Alex! We can’t wait to hear about your experiences.

Pictured: Vanessa and Alex
The ISP is pleased to introduce Mrs Mandy Myler (‘Miss Mandy’ to the students) who has accepted the role of homestay coordinator at CDSHS. Our international student program could not be more fortunate to have this amazing lady come on board to complete our new look team.
Mandy’s reputation precedes her as a top-quality operator with tonnes of experience working with communities and caring for families and students. The ISP will have a short transition period with of the role of Homestay Coordinator as Mandy begins to know our beautiful families, our school operating schedule and of course, our international students.

Cleveland High Vanuatu Mission Trip 2023

We are very excited to be planning a Cleveland High Vanuatu Trip for the winter holidays in 2023. Students who have participated in our past trips have said it is a life-changing experience. If you are successful in joining our trip, you will enjoy some of the best tropical island locations Vanuatu has to offer including waterfalls, blue lagoons and coral reefs. Vanuatu prides itself as being one of the happiest, most welcoming places on earth, and you would experience real village hospitality.
Our Purpose
Our team will aim to make a real difference in the lives of hundreds of ni-Vanuatu school children by installing multiple libraries in remote, impoverished village schools. By working together to help complete this mission, you would give poor children a chance at a much-improved education, putting them on a path to a better future.
Trip Overview
If you will be in Year 9-12 next year, you are invited to apply to be a member of our team. You would camp in a village school for a week, befriending the local children, reading books, visiting their homes and playing soccer and volleyball with them. A wonderful moment will be when you help hand out Vanuatu Gift Boxes to the children and see their reactions to the gifts packed by our school families. You would also spend a few days at our Sister School, Pango Centre School, building on the years of relationships forged by Cleveland High teams since 2005.
Parent Information
Our first Parent and Student Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 3 August from 6:30-8pm in T4. It is essential that parents and students attend this information evening before their position can be finally considered. We will outline the plans for this trip, including dates, costs, planned itinerary, pre-trip functions, fundraisers and other team commitments. Staff, students and parents are warmly invited to attend.

Reconciliation Week
Reconciliation Week began spectacularly with a large number of our Beyond Broncos students performing at the Broncos Titans game of the NRL Indigenous round. The performance was the culmination of a cultural leadership program designed by Bangarra Dance Theatre, that aims to inspire pride, kinship and strength in young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
The contemporary dance performance was a breathtaking exploration of the story depicted on the Broncos 2022 Indigenous jersey, that included the totems of the NRL and NRLW players. After weeks of rehearsals, the students saw their hard work come to fruition when they heard the cheers and applause from a packed Suncorp Stadium. Mia Billiard also contributed to the event by painting the boots of Delouise Hoeter. He must have felt like the deadliest player on the ground with those special boots. Students certainly demonstrated the Reconciliation theme “Be Brave, Make Change ” by showing their pride in their culture and inspiring other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. We are very proud of their efforts and achievement. Thanks to Jadeen Chisolm, our Beyond Broncos Student Support Officer for all her hard work to support this special experience for our students.
Other Reconciliation Week events included a special ICare lesson exploring this year’s theme, bush tukka and arts and crafts activities. Congratulations to Holly Blackie, Anika Anderson, Louella Cass, Isabella Ziviana and Lilliana Granata, the winners of the poster competition.

South East Region NAIDOC Awards
Congratulations go to Matilda Nemgus, who was awarded the 2022 South East Region Junior Secondary Academic Excellence (HASS) NAIDOC Award and Anika Anderson, who received the same award in the area of STEM.
Jason Kitchener was deservedly recognised for his outstanding support for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with the region’s 2022 Indigenous Education Worker NAIDOC Award at the recent Awards Ceremony held at Beaudesert State High School. Mighty achievements considering that our region extends as far as the NSW border. Cooee Elders received the Community Award for their great work in the Redlands community. Many of our students have benefited from their wonderful support. We are looking forward to our NAIDOC celebrations in week 2 next term.

Next P&C meeting: held on Tuesday July26th @ 7pm in the Innovation Centre F9 - F10 located behind the language block. Entry is via Russell Street.
Tuckshop
Menu options - Supplies of many essential ingredients are becoming either very expensive or scarce so Term 3 may see a few adjustments to the Tuckshop menu as we try and navigate these issues. Hopefully, it won’t be long before things correct themselves (and lettuce becomes available again) but we just need to adapt in the meantime. A number of items may increase in price but we are trying to keep this increase as low as possible.
Sushi is back on the menu on Thursday's only but, another day will be added later in Term 3 as we head into the warmer months. Again, supply issues have meant sushi cannot be offered every day but we are working towards this.
Order through Flexischools - to ensure your student will never miss out on what they want for their first or second break.

If you place the order that morning, your student can pick it up, but they will need to bring a copy of the confirmation email with them. (On their phone is fine).

IB Languages Workshop 2022
On Friday, 27 May Year 12 IB Languages students participated in an all-day workshop in preparation for their final Individual Orals conducted last week. Both students and teachers appreciated this opportunity to be engaged with their language for a continuous period of time, participate in intensive speaking activities and have some quality 1-on-1 time with their Language teacher before the assessment.
‘Overall, I found the at the incursion day was super useful and really helped me to develop my French and understand criteria for the upcoming oral exam. It was really nice to spend the day with my class and eating lots of foreign food at morning tea. The activities were very engaging and I really enjoyed the day!’ – Lily Shannon
‘I really enjoyed the incursion day. It was extremely helpful in the preparation for my Individual Oral as we practiced the structure of the IO, did questions and participated in fun activities that allowed myself and the others to better immerse ourselves in the language.’ – Bella Mierswa

Chinese Cultural Gala
Week 9 was a week of cultural activities for all our Junior Chinese students. From learning about the sophisticated board-game called ‘Go’ (Chinese-style chess) to trialling the unique Chinese calligraphic painting, students immersed themselves in a very distinguished form of art that comes from the Orient. The special blow-ink painting was a particular highlight as its novelty lit up much of the excitement from the students.
Furthermore, the students also celebrated the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival and watched the dragon boat races that were held all around the world. They enjoyed some Zongzi (made of sticky rice and meat or red bean filling) and were able to compare them with some foods found in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. Students learnt about the history of the festival, created some fantastic colourful posters and tried at creating the five-coloured bracelet.
Phew! What a busy week for teachers to prepare! However, everyone had an awesome time!

Senior Shout Outs –
Completed traineeship!
One of our students, Lambertine Gombongi, has just completed her Certificate III in Individual Support. Since completing the Certificate, her work place has offered Lambertine part-time employment until she finishes school, with a view to undertake full-time employment upon graduating from Cleveland DSHS. We are very excited for Lambertine and, we asked her about her experience with completing a school-based traineeship.
What did you enjoy the most from your traineeship?
EVERYTHING! Most of all I enjoyed the relationships I developed with my clients. There were so many sweet moments and friendships I made. I had clients say they look forward to seeing me each week.
What were the benefits of doing your traineeship?
The biggest one was getting more experience on the floor, many of the nurses that started at the same time had knowledge from doing their course but not hands on training and I learnt that on the job while also getting my certificate.
Because I have done my traineeship in an organisation and I have now been offered a part-time role outside of school hours and it also means I am going into a higher pay rate instead of the starting wage.
The organisation I worked for also offers the option to go onto University to get higher qualifications.
What did you find helped you the most?
Having the support through our mentor to ask questions. The other nurses and I could sit and talk with her each week and she would check if there were things we didn’t understand or anything we weren’t sure of.
If you are interested in undertaking a school-based traineeship of any kind please come up to the Senior Engagement Hub, G Block, for more information and opportunities.

Scholarships!
Each year, one of our lucky Business Diploma students receives a scholarship for the cost of the Diploma. This is an excellent opportunity as tuition fees are approximately $2,500. Students are asked to write a short essay which explains why they have chosen to complete the course and how they intend to utilise their business diploma in order to reach future goals.
This year we had 2 stand out essays and Axiom College have awarded 2 scholarships!
Congratulations must go to successful applicants Lara Wilson and Mia Goode. Both students articulated interesting plans for their future in business and we wish them success in their studies. Well done.

Mia Goode accepts her certificate from Executive Principal Mr Leonard McKeown

Creative Generation – Excellence Awards in Visual Art
In May, two of our Visual Art Teachers, Emily Glover and Gayle Price, along with Creative Arts Head of Department, Simon Watson, were thrilled to attend the opening of the Exhibition of Creative Generation- Visual Art 2022 at the Gallery of Modern Art. This exhibition featured the work of Indiana Gough who completed Year 12 Art in 2021 and was prestigiously selected from hundreds of applicants for an Excellence in Visual Art Award for her work, Serial Cereal. Congratulations to Indiana and the fabulous Visual Art team for this impressive achievement!

Art Club
Great artwork start with grass root skills, and our extra-curricular Art Club has been working on developing drawing skills. The students have practiced different shading techniques with graphite and blenders, trying hatching, cross hatching, shading, scribbling and stippling. Students were asked to choose 3 objects of different size and decide on an interesting composition. They had to create a light source and add value with any of the shading techniques. Well done everyone!

Senior Acting Ensemble
Students from Senior Acting Ensemble are working with Queensland Theatre on “The Scene Project”. An ‘Artist in Residence’ visited our school to work with these enthusiastic students on their interpretation of a script written by Queensland playwright, Susie Miller, called Chroma Town. Students will present their interpretation of the script later in the year to directors, writers and actors. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to create and collaborate with professionals and peers.

Creative Arts in the Classroom
Year 10 Dance
This term our Year 10 Dance students have focussed their attention on the foundations and styles of Hip Hop Dance, which is a genre with powerful context both socio-politically and culturally. To enhance their understanding and strengthen their deeper learning skills, they have been researching a style of hip hop and created some informative Mockumentary style films which both informs an audience, and develops a student-centred approach to learning. What a truly entertaining way for us to learn about hip hop. Their Mockumentaries were hilarious, and very informative!

Year 11 Film, Television and New Media
Our Year 11 Film students have been working in groups to develop a short film that inspires positive social change among young people in our community. Topics they have explored include domestic violence, substance abuse, and social exclusion. Students will be submitting their short films to the high school film competition called 'Video for Change', which is an exciting competition opportunity for students to create work which makes a difference to our society. For more information see: https://australia.videosforchange.org/
One group has transformed one of our editing suites into a studio to film a scene communicating their chosen social issue about domestic violence (see below). We look forward to sharing the final films at our FAMED Exhibition at the end of Term 3!

Year 9 Media Arts
Our Year 9 Media Arts in Practice students have been developing their skills in Adobe Illustrator. Their task was to design 2 contrasting posters for a game/band/movie/tv show of their choice. The process started with learning how to make simple shapes and building skills with each editing tool, to then creating a variety of landscapes and famous scenes before planning and creating their posters. The end result has been some awesome posters – keep up the good work Year 9s!

Visual Art
The following images are just a few of the beautiful artworks created by our Visual Art students from Years 9 to 11, showing the range of mediums and experiences these students are able to explore in their Visual Art studies. Congratulations on your great work students!

Drama Incursion
This term students from Years 9 and 10 Drama, and a select lucky few from Year 7 and 8, were treated to a performance of Right Clique by Shake & Stir Theatre Company. The performance explored themes of school, relationships and working pressures, as well as the choices young people make every day which can affect who they are and how they interact with the world. Students were able to ask the actors questions about an actor’s life and their rehearsal process. This was a great learning experience for our own budding actors and a thought-provoking performance which inspired great class discussions.

Creative Arts Ambassador News
This term, our Ambassadors have been working to fulfil their mission of engaging our school community with the Arts. They have run a series of lunchtime activities including; a Guitar and Ukulele workshop for our junior students, a ‘Just Dance’ session, a water colouring workshop and a Talent Show. These activities were advertised on Daymap to the whole school community and have been enjoyed by many students, not just students studying an Arts subject. It has been wonderful to see the joy that being engaged with the Arts can bring, and we look forward to more fun and creative lunchtime activities in Arts Week next term. 😊

Student Point of View – Creative Arts
Hello everyone!
I'm Brennan Beattie, one of the Senior Creative Arts Ambassadors here at Cleveland District State High School! I have been participating in many of the amazing Creative Arts Programs Cleveland High School offers since day 1 and, have always had lots of fun doing so. I am in year 12 Drama, Music, Dance, and Music Extension. I'm also in Senior Dance Team, Senior Acting Extension, Musical Theatre Troupe, the school's Rock Band, Senior Vocal Ensemble, and a vocalist for the Wind Ensemble. These ensembles are all working towards performances in Semester 2, which is very exciting. As an extracurricular activity, I am also part of the Redland City Choir.
Currently in Drama, we are working on our IA3 Directorial vision multi-modal presentation. In this unit we are transforming the Greek text 'Medea' into a Contemporary performance by taking different parts of the text and adding our own chosen social issue that could relate to the script. We are then presenting our directorial pitch in a multi-modal presentation.
In Music, we have been exploring different music Genres like Opera, Musical Theatre, Film Music, and Video Game Music and analysing their musical elements to see how these pieces tell a story. This is leading up to our IA3, where we will be choosing to either perform or compose a song that has a narrative meaning or tells a story.
In Dance at the moment, we are currently working on our IA3 Choreography Moving My Way. In class, we have explored and analysed many different choreographers and learned about how their movement style and dances reflect their personal contexts, influences, and perspectives. For this assessment, we are to choreograph a dance that reflects a personal experience in our life through our own chosen movement style.
In Music Extension, we are exploring different music Genres and performing a chosen set list of songs from them. I have chosen to sing I'm Alive from the Broadway musical Next to Normal, History Repeating by the Propellerheads (featuring Shirley Bassey), Ave Maria by Franz Schubert, and Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper.
I am so grateful to have had all of these opportunities that the Creative Arts program at Cleveland District State High School has offered me over the course of my time here, and I can’t wait to participate in all of the upcoming performances.
Science Holiday Programs

Courtney Taylor, Isabelle Miller
Good Luck to our Science students participating in holiday programs
Many of our senior Science students will be working hard over the June-July holiday period, having been successful in their applications for competitive extra-curricular Science activities.
Courtney Taylor (Year 12 Marine Science student) and Isabelle Miller (Year 12 Biology and Environmental Systems & Societies student) have gained fully-funded George Alexander Foundation scholarship to attend the EarthWatch Student Challenge 3-9 July – “Protecting the Reef’s Coastal Frontier”, at Boyne Island Environmental Education Centre in Gladstone. Only 8 students were selected for this program out of approximately 1000 applicants, so we congratulate Courtney and Isabelle for their outstanding applications and can’t wait to hear about their experience.
Emily Pack (Year 11 Biology and Chemistry student) will be attending the UQ Winter Biology School at the university’s St Lucia campus 4-5 July. She will be working with students from across Queensland exploring and solving challenges in contemporary topics including animal physiology, marine biology, ecology and conservation biology, genetics and quantitative biology. Emily will be working with leading academics in these fields through interactive lectures, practicals, workshops and tutorials. We wish Emily well for an informative and engaging university experience.
Vanessa Feng and Alex Yin (Year 11 Physics, Chemistry and ESS students) have both gained places in the prestigious International Science School, which is being run online from 2-10 July. Only 150 students from across the country are selected, and we are so proud that two of our high achieving students will have the opportunity to participate. They will be working with leading researchers and innovators across many fields of STEM while networking with like-minded students around the country. They are also looking forward to the social activities such as trivia competitions, games and meme challenges.

Alex Yin and Vanessa Feng
Jemma Griffin (Year 12 Physics and Chemistry student) and Jaleyna Ferrer (Year 12 Biology, Chemistry and ESS student) have been successful in their audition to participate in a new STEM-based reality TV show on Network 10. Filming takes place in July and we can expect to see them on our screens (Ten Shake, Network Ten and Ten Play) in September. Jemma and Jaleyna don’t know yet what kinds of challenges they will face, but we can’t wait to see the outcome! Details will be posted on the school’s social media and newsletter closer to the screening date.

Jemma Griffin & Jaleyna Ferrer
We are thrilled to have so many of our students putting themselves out there and having their talent and dedication recognised by such a diverse range of Science programs. We also thank their Science teachers (Mrs Lawrence, Mr Cooper, Mrs Maguire, Mrs Morgan and Mr Sarai) who have provided them with mentoring, encouragement and written references to support their applications.
Keep an eye on the school’s newsletter and Facebook page for updates from these bright future science leaders.

Free Study: Anxiety disorders

INVITATION FOR PARTICIPANTS
ONLINE ASSESSMENT OF ANXIETY DISORDERS IN AUSTRALIAN ADOLESCENTS
Is your teenager frequently nervous in social situations, overly worried about lots of little things, afraid to be away from you, or afraid of specific objects or situations (e.g., dogs, doing speeches at school)?
At Macquarie University, we are conducting an online study that includes a thorough assessment of anxiety concerns in adolescents 12 to 17 years. We are providing this service online via Telehealth and at no cost to families. Participants will also receive a $30 gift voucher as a thank-you for their time.
If you believe your teenager may be experiencing anxiety, please contact bddproject@mq.edu.au to out more about the project.
Helping Teens Manage Emotions & Relationship Problems
Calling for families: Trial of programs for teenagers experiencing peer problems
Families of teenagers (school year levels 7-12) are invited to participate in a trial of two group therapy programs designed to help teenagers manage emotions and relationship problems, like bullying or conflict. The programs will be offered in small groups by a therapist (psychologist) through Zoom (online).
This trial is managed by researchers who are psychologists and psychiatrists from QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and The University of Queensland. Please visit the website below for more information and to express interest in participating:
