From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families

We’ve had a number of events and celebrations of success since our last newsletter. I’d like to highlight some of these for you. Many other events are celebrated in this newsletter.

New Tuckshop, Outdoor Seating Area and Engagement Centre

Contractors started work during the June holidays to survey and prepare the site. Very soon, ground work will begin. This will be a significant improvement to our school’s facilities and will be completed during Term 1 2023.

Mt Gravatt Show

A huge congratulations to Pip Price, Andrew Ryan and Ag staff and the Cleveland District High School Show Team for a fantastic result at the Mt Gravatt Show. Our team won Supreme Grand Champion, Sheep of the Show, Grand Champion Ram, Grand Champion Ewe, Champion Ram Lamb, Champion 2 Tooth Ewe, Champion 4 Tooth Ewe and Champion Progeny Group.

Department of Education International Global Conference

I attended the Department of Education International Global Conference recently and am very pleased to inform you that two of our staff, Kylie Venamore and Vanessa Blackburn, were invited to present their significant work on our school’s success in embedding global perspectives in the curriculum. This success has led to improvement in student results in a number of subjects which is great news and was celebrated at the conference.

The good news didn’t end there. At the conference awards ceremony two of our students won prestigious prizes! Richard Qin won the Queensland Academic Student of the Year Award and Kim Tran won the Queensland Community Engagement Award. This included a trophy and a $500 gift voucher. There were only five state awards and we won two!

Congratulations to Karen Abraham, who was selected to present at the Redlands Regional Jobs Committee Futures Forum on how industry and schools can collaborate to improve the training and employment outcomes for our students and provide local choices.  She then was part of a panel to discuss local jobs, education and training with the DESBT Regional Director, TAFE Qld Director of Educational Support Services, a Director of a major HR firm and the Head of Industry Engagement for James Cook University. These partnerships create many additional opportunities for our students by encouraging school-based apprenticeships, traineeships and post-secondary study options.

I wish students a very successful Term 3.

Futures Forum

On Friday 22 July, our school participated in the Future’s Forum organised by the Redlands Regional Jobs Committee (RJC) and the Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce at Sirromet.  The Forum aimed to discuss the economic future of the Redlands with a focus on local jobs, education and training, business growth and investment opportunities.  It was an excellent way to bring together local industry, schools, tertiary providers and policy makers to hear about, and contribute to, the future of the region as well as develop networks and connections.

Deputy Principal (and member of the RJC) Karen Abraham was joined by Courtney Taylor, School Captain, and Tom Carmichael, 2021 graduate who is now studying at QUT as they participated in panel questions, workshops and presentations focussing on how schools and industries can forge links as well as exploring possible Tertiary study options in the local area.

Jandai Languages Update

Yura! Our first cohort of Year 7 students have been busy learning the Jandai language this term. Through our studies, we have also been exploring the history and Culture of the Nunukul, Ngugi and Goenpul people, the Traditional Owners of the Quandamooka Nation.

These Deadly Gingin (awesome children) have been enthusiastic to share their experiences and knowledge. This week, our students had the opportunity to share elements of their culture and the Jandai language through a presentation they made to the visiting study tour group from Adachi Gakuen High School, Japan. The students were responsible for all aspects of the presentation - from choosing which elements of their culture and language to share, creating the powerpoint and then presenting to this group. Students lead games and activities and welcomed these visitors, by dancing to ‘Yura!’.  It was an honour to see each student stand proudly to share their knowledge and to interact with this visiting group.

Watch this space for more Deadly updates from Ms Dawkings and the Year 7 Jandai class.

Adachi Gakuen Study Tour Visit

What a treat to welcome our first Japan Study Tour from Adachi Gakuen High School, Tokyo to our school since 2019.  The 17 Japanese male students enjoyed a speaking-focused class with our Year 9 Japanese classes on Friday, 4 August.  Activities included Speed-dating, Find Somewho Who, Show and Share Aussie food and/or items and Pictionary.

As we can see in the photos, the various activities were not only a great opportunity for our Year 9 Japanese students to use their Japanese, and for the Adachi Gakuen students to speak English, but also to create new international friendships.

Naturally, the students were a little shy at first, but they soon warmed up and had a wonderful time.  They all truly appreciated this momentous occasion and look forward to keeping in contact with the Adachi students.

News from Student Support Services

Dear parents, guardians and carers

Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:

  • year of schooling
  • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
  • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to:

  • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
  • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
  • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.dese.gov.au/about-us/resources/department-education-skills-and-employment-complete-privacy-policy-0).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact Kerry Bevan at Student Support.

Kind regards

Kerry Bevan
Deputy Principal

French Excursion to Alliance Francaise

On June 22, 10 year 11 and 12 International Baccalaureate students participated in a French excursion to Alliance Française to experience a taste of French culture through various activities. It was a great opportunity for them to be immersed in French and meet French-speaking people.

The tour included a wide range of activities chosen according to the students' needs: French general knowledge, French events, Francophonie with a focus on pronunciation, listening and writing. Students also learned more about Alliance Française, while enjoying a “goûter à la française” with an exquisite chocolate cake.

“It was interesting to see how much French I could understand in a more real-world context rather than simply talking in French only for specific exercises. With all of the French speaking throughout the day, it helped me to become more immersed in the language which I really enjoyed.” (Bella Mierswa, year 12 IB)

“I had a very good time at the excursion. It allowed me to improve my listening and reading skills. Everyone there were very welcoming and provided us a safe and constructive learning environment. I had an amazing time and the cake was very tasty.” (Jaleyna Ferrer, year 12 IB)

“I enjoyed participating in the Alliance Française excursion. I think that it was an excellent opportunity to participate in activities with my classmates and gain knowledge of the French language. It was a great experience and I feel that it was beneficial and helped to improve my French knowledge”.( Livinia Briggs, year 11 IB)

“Our excursion to Alliance Française was a great experience. The teachers were incredibly encouraging and created a judgement free environment to help us feel confident speaking French. I particularly enjoyed being exposed to French music!” ( Zara Nolan, year 11 IB))

Through the excursion, students learnt to appreciate the French culture, as well as understand and foster awareness of cultural and language diversity as a global citizen.

Senior IB Japanese Ab Initio – UQ Visit

Students outside the Forgan Smith Building

On the 22nd of July, the Year 11 and 12 IB Japanese students went to The University of Queensland (UQ) in St. Lucia. The main goals were to raise the students’ awareness of possibilities for pursuing studies of Japanese at a university level, through participation in language workshops taught by UQ lecturers of Japanese and UQ student volunteers. The Japanese IB seniors experienced a range of activities that were generously organised by the UQ School of Languages. The activities were focused on revision and extension work on specific Japanese complex grammar.

A short tour of the campus gave the students a vision of what it would be like to attend The University of Queensland.
Some quotes from the students:

“I actually understood and learnt so much in the activities, like seriously!” – Isabelle Everington

"Gave brilliant insight into the scale of studying Japanese and how it can expand into a valuable skill to have in the workforce." – Hayu Son

"Refreshingly tasteful" - Joseph Purdom.

Cleveland Classic Basketball Tournament

Cleveland District hosted its inaugural Cleveland Classic Basketball Tournament last week. Nine schools from the Southeast competed across two days in two highly competitive divisions, Year 8 and 10 Boys.

The Grade 8 division was dominated by both Cleveland team in the pool games, with each team remaining undefeated. In the semi finals Cleveland first team won over Redlands in comfortable fashion with a 35-point victory. The second semi-final had Cleveland second team match up with Trinity College in what was the match of the tournament. Unfortunately, Cleveland second team missing out on the final by 3 points. The final was all Cleveland, with a convincing 30-point win over Trinity College. Congratulations to the Year 8 Cleveland team.

The Cleveland Year 10s showed their strength through the first day also going undefeated to top their pool. Led by John Cooper and Jamaika Kanawi, the Cleveland team stormed into the final playing great basketball. The final paired the Cleveland against the reigning State Champions Trinity College team. After a hard fought first half Cleveland trailed by 9, but the resilience and fight in Cleveland allowed them to claw their way back into the game trailing by 2 with minutes to go. The experience of Trinity College ending up too much for the Cleveland team with Trinity holding on for a 5-point victory.

This event could not happen without the exceptional expertise that our Cleveland students show in scoring, officiating and organising. A special mention to those students that scored, officiated, and refereed the event. They were instrumental in the success of the tournament.  Well done to all participants.

Debating Update

A lot has been happening in the debating world at Cleveland District State High School.

Firstly, the year 7 debating competition has started, with Cleveland entering one team of enthusiastic debating novices. For their first debate, the team took on Alexandra State High School, on the topic ‘That we should ban advertising aimed at children’. With their impressive arguments and persuasive speeches, the Cleveland team won this debate. The team are now busy preparing for their next debate against Mansfield State High School. We wish them luck!

In week 1 of this term, around 25 of our most passionate debaters participated in a workshop run by the Queensland Debating Union. The students delved into a range of topics, such as the different types of debates, constructing effective arguments, and rebuttals. All students who participated found the workshop worthwhile, and they can’t wait to apply what they learnt to future debates.

Finally, the year 8-12 debating season has come to an end. We had a very successful year, with all teams winning at least one debate. A special mention goes to the year 12.2 team (made up of year 11 and 12 students), who made it to the final rounds. We hope all debaters enjoyed the experience this year, and we look forward to having them on the team again in 2023.

2022 Share the Dignity Drive

Once again, for the month of August, the Student Council is supporting the ‘2022 Share the Dignity Drive’. Last year we collected 240 sanitary items for this cause. This year our aim is 260.

Share the Dignity is an organisation, donating sanitary products to those experiencing homelessness, domestic violence, or without access to those products.

Share the dignity have donated over 3.4 million items since 2015, a further 11 thousand reusable items, and have over 6 thousand volunteers. (https://www.sharethedignity.org.au)

How can you help? Thank you for donating one sanitary item for this worthwhile cause.

Where can you put your donation? We have collection bins in the library for the month of August.

Student Council encourages all students to support this worthwhile cause. Your donation makes a big difference.

News from our P & C

The Student Support and Enrichment Fund is back! The CDSHS P&C Association is excited to be able to accept applications once again after a 2-year hiatus.

For those who are unfamiliar with this P&C initiative, the SSEF provides a pathway for students to apply for financial assistance in relation to an activity where they are representing CDSHS at a regional, state or national level event. Applications for access to assistance under the SSEF is open to all CDSHS students who:

 incur costs while participating in an eligible activity; and

 receives endorsement from the Head of Department responsible for the activity.

Applications can be collected from the Uniform Shop during open hours or downloaded from P&C page on the CDSHS webpage.

Next P&C meeting: held on Tuesday Aug 23rd @ 7pm in the Innovation Centre F9 - F10 located behind the language block. Entry is via Russell Street.

Tuckshop

Price increases – With supplies of many essential ingredients still proving very expensive or scarce, the P&C has had to make the difficult decision to increase the price on a number of items. This mostly applies to the burger options and some homemade meals but the price increase is as minimal as possible. Staple items such as pies, sausage rolls and garlic bread have not been affected.

Sushi- is back on the menu on Thursdays only but another day will be added later in Term 3 as we head into the warmer months. Again, supply issues have meant sushi cannot be offered every day but we are working towards this.

Order through Flexischools - to ensure your student will never miss out on what they want for their first or second break.

Uniform Shop

Parents/Caregivers – Winter stock – we are fully stocked, please come in and see us or order via flexi schools if you still need winter items.

Black long pants – We have girls’ and boys’ black pants available if you are needing some for winter or for music especially with the Redlands Eisteddfod coming up, please just come in and see us.

Flexischool orders – Can only be picked up during the term when the shop is open.  If you place your order during the holidays, it will be fulfilled and awaiting pickup on our return.  If you place the order that morning, your student can pick it up, but they will need to bring a copy of the confirmation email with them. (On their phone is fine)

Lay-by – NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO COME IN FOR NEXT YEAR before the rush…Available in store only.  Come in and organise a layby for end of year pick up if you have a new student starting or junior heading into senior in 2023.

Second-hand clothing – Please remember we cannot accept any items that are not freshly laundered, dried, and pressed if needed, or that is not CURRENT uniform. Any items that we cannot resell or donate do need to be taken away with you as we do not have a large storage area. Please ensure all items have no stains, paint marks, rips, broken zips etc. as they will not be accepted and will need to be taken away with you. There is a 30% fee taken off the total for the P&C (with proceeds from the store going back to the school to help our students!) and the rest will be refunded either directly to your bank card that you have purchased items with previously (if the total is under $120) or direct to your bank account (if over $120, we run this cycle each second Tuesday during the school terms), you do not have to wait for the items to be sold instore.

General – Shop Hours during term are MON, TUE, and THURS 8am – 10.30am.

Readers Cup

On Thursday 28th July our Year 9 and Year 10 students proudly represented CDSHS at the Brisbane Bayside Regional round of Readers Cup, organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children’s Book Council of Australia. Our teams performed exceptionally well and both teams finished in the top ten out of 17 teams from the Bayside Region. Students are to be congratulated on their extensive effort in reading and quizzing each other in preparation for the event. Well done to our avid readers.

On Wednesday 31st August our Junior team will compete at St Laurence’s College for the State Final. We wish them all the very best. Go Cleveland!

Book Club

Our Year 9/10 Book Club met on Wednesday in Week 10 of Term 2 and discussed the novel choice (by the students), Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. We enjoyed our discussion of the love/hate relationship of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. All students are welcome to join Book Club. Students can look out for the next announcement in the coming weeks.

Book Week

The annual CBCA Book Week is fast approaching. Staff and students are invited to join in on the festivities from August 22nd to August 26th. We will hold author talks, a Scholastic book stall, book week craft and a dress up day on Friday 26th August. This year’s theme is ‘Dreaming with Eyes Open’ and is about listening to Country as the first storytellers. In celebration of this year’s theme our First Nations students and staff in collaboration with other CDSHS students and staff, designed and painted a rainbow serpent for the Library. It looks spectacular!

New Novels

The Library is always keen to promote contemporary novels, by Australian authors and international writers. We have a large collection of fantastic new fiction. Students will adore some of our recent titles that speak to their age group. We are always happy to recommend new novels to your student if they are in search of something in particular. The research shows that reading helps to improve their critical thinking, expand their vocabulary, increase empathy and ignite their imagination.

Outstanding Resources

At the end of Term 2, students received email notification of any outstanding resources they have from the Library. Please encourage your student to return their novels in a timely manner and in good condition.

Lost and Found

If your student has lost property, please send them to the Library as we have a mountain of hats, jumpers and spectacles. Please note that at the end of each semester we donate any uncollected items to charity and/or the Junior and Senior Engagement Centres.

Happy reading from the CDSHS Library Team!

Success at the District Athletics Championships

The recent Bayside District Athletics Championships for 13-19 years saw some fantastic individual performances at the QSAC track at Nathan by the Cleveland Students.   A number of students will now earn selection to compete in the Met East Athletics carnival at the end of August.   This followed on from an excellent school athletics carnival held on the last day of term 2.

2 new records were acknowledged at our school carnival.  The first was a shot-put record broken by Breeze Ruka in year 7 for 12 years Shot Put.  She beat the old mark by a huge 2m with a throw of 9.10m. The second Record breaker was Anika Clarke who set a new record for 17 years Triple Jump.  Anika set a new mark of 10.05m beating the old record by 18cm.  This record had stood for 27 years.

The exciting conclusion to the School Carnival saw all the best sprinters pitted against each other for the Cleveland Gift.  This year the winners of the Gift were Anika Clarke and Adam Wilson.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander News

What a start to term 3! A class of Year 7 students have started studying Jandai as their chosen language. We are very grateful to the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council for their guidance in the development of this curriculum. With the assistance of Ms Dawkings and Jason Kitchener, these students recently did an outstanding job teaching visiting students from Adachi Gakuen High School, Japan about language, culture and Quandamooka Country.

Week 2 saw students celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and exploring this year’s NAIDOC theme: Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up. Students engaged in activities ranging from jewellery making to a collaborative mural. The Year 7s enjoyed a wonderful afternoon starting with a smoking ceremony and dancing by our students, led by Uncle Raymond Walker, Jahlow Walker and Tyrone Beard, concluding with students sharing what Get Up, Stand Up, Show up meant to them and, celebrating the significant contributions of Oodgeroo Noonuccal. Uncle Norm Enoch’s Welcome to Country also explored this theme.  The sausage sizzle donated by Beyond Broncos and served by BB ambassadors including Alex Glenn was a well-received conclusion to our week of NAIDOC celebrations.

This term’s Beyond Broncos workshop featured resilience and respect. Students explored these topics while participating in a variety of interesting activities. A trip to see Wesley Enoch’s musical, The Sunshine Club was enjoyed by all in week 4.  This performance provided an insight into Brisbane’s First Nation’s community at the end of World War 2, in a poignant tale of love and injustice told with humour and warmth.  The audience cried and laughed, and left the performance with a little more understanding of what life must have been like for our First Nation community in the past.  We are very grateful to our friends at QPAC for providing our school with the opportunity to experience this show.

Some comments from students:

Jasa- Amazing and Dave is the funniest person ever!

Bri- It was amazing, spectacular and a once in a lifetime experience that you have to see with your own eyes!

Avara- Very inspiring!

Stevie- It was deadly and I appreciate that they let us attend for free.

Chelsea- It was very good. I was surprised that it was funnier than I thought it would be.

The Deadly Teens program starts this week with ten of our students participating. We are grateful for the mentorship provided by Simon Burr and Chloe Smith from Yourtown. Congratulations to the ten, Year 10 students who have been nominated for QATSIF (Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Fund) scholarships as a result of their great attendance, results and good behaviour.  QATSIF’s scholarship funding comes from the interest on unallocated Stolen Wages reparation funds from 2008, which are held in trust by the Public Trustee. Congratulations also goes to the many students who celebrated with a pizza party and received certificates for their excellent behaviour and engagement in Semester 1.  We can be very proud of our jarjums.

Cleveland High Students Referee at State Football Championships

Recently 9 students from Cleveland High participated in the State U12 Football Championships held at Wynnum Wolves FC across 4 days.  This was the highest representation of any school and shows the level of match officials being produced at our school.

Over 4 days these students covered games as referee and assistant referee and were given valuable feedback to develop their performance.   These students were appointed to 6 games a day and then completed the day with a skills training session on the fields at Wynnum.   Congratulations to the following students who mostly have completed their entry qualification of level 4 through the school program:

Alfie Brown, Austin Woolley, Brayden McPherson, Kyla Hanson, Sadie Green, Zach Cornford, Jaxon O’Brien, Maxim Gaffanov, Daniel King.

Special Mention to Daniel King, Sadie Green, Zach Cornford and Kyla Hanson who were involved on all 4 days.  Sadie even returned to referee after participating in the Bill Turner Trophy match on Friday.   This was an invaluable experience for all of these students and will further develop the skills and depth of officials within our student group.

Senior Schools Cup Volleyball

Cleveland had a very successful weekend at the Volleyball QLD Senior Schools Cup tournament. The Open Boys Division 2 team coached by new recruit, Mr. Miller took home the Gold Medal in Division 2. The boys played a near faultless tournament, going through undefeated playing some high-quality volleyball. The Open Girls Honours team finished fifth overall in a performance that will hopefully secure them a wildcard entry into the Open Honours division at the Australian Schools Cup in December, where Cleveland is the defending champion girls’ school of Australia. The girls fought hard all weekend in what was a closely-contested division, narrowly losing in five-sets to the eventual gold medallists, Craigslea SHS.

The Year 11 Girls Honours team which consisted of some Year 10 and 8 students finished in 6th place, gaining some valuable experience before their Australian Schools Cup campaign, where they are looking to be at the top of the 10 Girls Honours division. The girls took a lot away from the weekend, and Coach Corby will now be able to fine tune areas of their game to make them an even better outfit. The Year 9/10 girls played up in Year 11 Division 2 and narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing in 4th place. The girls played some great volleyball, considering they were missing a few players who were playing up with the Open honours team.

The Year 10 boys rose to the challenge of competing in Year 11 Division 1, finishing mid-table. This was a great result for the boys and has Coach Gibson excited to see how the boys progress in the near future. They learnt some valuable lessons and hopefully can apply some of this in their training to prepare them well for the end-of-year tournament.

Congratulations to all athletes and thank-you to the staff and ex-students who gave up their time to coach and support these teams over the course of the weekend.

CDSHS Football Program News

The CDSHS Football program has been in full swing recently. Along with our Wednesday morning sessions, the players have had a flurry of games recently to show the State our intent to become the best Football School, spear headed by our football excellence program.

Our recent SPL match against Murrumba SSC ended in mixed results with the Junior boys and Senior girls suffering narrow defeats 2-1 and 4-3 respectively. The highlight was Kyla Hanson Scoring from half way for the Senior girls. Our Intermediate boys continued their charge to the finals with a solid 3-1 win putting them now one win away from playing SPL Finals. The Senior Boys scored a valuable point drawing 3-3 away from home whilst the Junior girls unfortunately did not come away with any points. We now focus our attention to this Friday where we play our final game against Harristown. Although it will be an early 6am bus trip, this will give the players more time together and allow them to continue to grow their relationships with each other off the field. We have a great culture amongst our ranks which I want to continue to grow.

Some fantastic news! Our Girls U15 team had a fantastic run in the Bill Turner Cup. They recently competed in the final’s series where the best 4 schools in the State turned up to play off against each other. We got to this stage by winning our initial Gala day against 3 other schools and then winning our next 3 sudden death matches, beating heavy hitters Cav Road and Helensvale along the way. We then drew Cairns State High in the Qld Semi Final. Cairns were on another level to us on this occasion, ended up winning the tournament. We did however, compete  well in the 3rd /4th play off against another big football school, Kelvin Grove. With a narrow 3-2 loss, the girls ended 2022 with a ranking of 16th in the country. This has never been achieved by any girl’s team in the history of our school in the 31 years the Girls Trophy has been running. In addition to this, the young age of our team should be noted; most of the teams competing mainly consisted of year 10’s. Half of our team were made up of Year 7/8 and 9’s which is very promising for the years to come.
