Dear Families
A very warm welcome to the 2023 school year at Cleveland District State High School. I’d like to extend a special welcome to new families and students to our school community. Our enrolment has continued to increase and is currently 2290. The popularity of Cleveland District State High School continues to grow, evidenced by the significant number of additional enrolment applications that we were not able to accept. Our school’s reputation is very strong from our culture, our rich history, our high expectations and care of students, our subject offerings and being recognised and accredited as an international school.
Our priorities for 2023 are to continue to improve our school’s performance to ensure our students are on a pathway for success. This is achieved through the three pillars of the new Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Strategic Plan. These are:
- Educational Achievement
- Wellbeing and Engagement
- Culture and Inclusion
What this means at Cleveland District is that we will focus our efforts and resources to improve learning programs, opportunities, wellbeing and support for our students. Part of this approach is to further enhance our facilities and it is very exciting that our new tuckshop, outdoor area and engagement centre is expected to be completed at the end of Term 2. This will provide further world-class facilities for our students and staff.
Recently, we received our school’s Year 12 results from 2022. I’m very happy to let you know that all of our students received a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA). This is a remarkable achievement and will allow our students to be on a successful pathway post high school. Our 100% result compared to a Queensland average of 94%. Given that we’re one of the largest state schools in the state this is something to really celebrate. I congratulate students and staff for this result. Our Australian Tertiary Rank (ATAR), IB Diploma and Vocational Educational results were very high across the board. This demonstrates the success of our unique three-year senior school program with four distinct pathway options.
I’d like to recognise two significant results from the end of last year. Emily Pack and Anna Jaison, both Year 12, 2023, were two of only 25 biology students from across Queensland to be offered a place in the University of Queensland Biology Summer School 2023. They will create a project with the intention of entering this in the 70th Queensland Science Contest later in 2023. Rori Macnamara, Year 10, 2023, has won a Queensland position as a 2023 STEM Champion. Rori will lead a number of initiatives in our school next year as well as to attend and participate in a range of South East Queensland activities and events.
Last December, our school competed in the Australian Volleyball Championships. The results have just become official so I’m pleased to let you know that our school finished 5th overall in Australia out of a total of 112 schools that participated and placed 2nd for Queensland schools! That’s an incredible result. I congratulate our coaches and their teams for their dedication and commitment.
We had a wonderful swimming carnival this year and our school’s team competed in the District competition achieving 3rd place. We were also the school who had the most age champions. A very notable achievement was Dylan Pieterse who won the 16 years Boys Age Champion. In achieving this feat, Dylan broke the record in 100m Backstroke and 100m Butterfly. This is on the back of Dylan breaking three records at our school carnival.
We have been asked by Griffith University to participate in research that is being conducted to better understand the relationship between video gaming and sleep problems in adolescents. This can impact on learning so it’s important research. This study is approved by the Department of Education. I encourage families to consider being involved to contribute to this project. More information is provided in this newsletter.
Our school staff look forward to working with you so every student has a successful pathway through high school and beyond.
I wish all students a successful start to the year.

2023 Interhouse Swimming Report

The Interhouse Swimming Carnival took place on Tuesday 6th February, in perfect conditions. The hot and muggy conditions from the previous week had been replaced by sunny, but milder, weather. The grandstand and surrounding hill areas were packed with staff and students who were kept entertained by some wonderful performances in the pool, and some high energy music provided by the tech team. The marshals were kept busy with a very high volume of competitive and non-competitive races. Our House Captains should be commended for the way that they encouraged students from their Houses to fill the events.
Congratulations to the following students who were crowned Age Champions for 2023:
Boys Girls
12 Years Hudson Arnold Caylee McGuire
13 Years Nathan Pieterse Saige Watts
14 Years Harley Allen Lucille Billing
15 Years Felix Lai Jasna Pospisil
16 Years Dylan Pieterse* Kiarna McGuire
Open Ivan Lai Ciara Stewart
* Dylan also broke 3 school records on the day!
The final House Points were as follows:

Thank you to Mr Eldridge, Mrs McKell and the HPE department for all of the work done behind the scenes in preparation for the carnival. Good luck to all of our students who have been selected for the CDSHS swim team, who will compete at the Bayside District Swimming Carnival on Thursday 16th February at Chandler. You and your parents will receive an email soon with details of the carnival. Congratulations students, and thank you for your attention this afternoon.

School to Work for Secondary Students with Disability
NAPLAN Online - Term 1, Weeks 8 & 9

As per our previous email to parents, NAPLAN Online will take place at scheduled times during weeks 8 & 9 this term. Regular classes will be taking place at all other times, with students expected to attend as normal.
Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN, as it is a point-in-time test for literacy and numeracy skills already learnt. The tailored (or adaptive) testing that is offered online, where the test presents questions which are more or less difficult depending on the student’s responses, ensures that all students can easily engage with the test.
Parents and students may find it useful to look at the types of tests and questions on the Public Demonstration Site by clicking here https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/public-demonstration-site
If you have any questions or require further information, please contact Deputy Principal Esther Alexander, on ealex13@eq.edu.au

News from our P & C
The AGM was held on Tuesday 21st February @ 7pm, followed by the first general meeting for the year. Our next P & C Meeting will be held on Tuesday 23 May in the Innovation Centre F9 - F10 located behind the Language block. Entry is via Russell Street. New members always welcome.
Tuckshop
The Tuckshop is back into full swing and busy every day feeding the 2000+ students. A new staff member will be coming onboard very soon to help the team keep up with demand.
Unfortunately supply costs are soaring on certain items and very reluctantly we must pass some of these costs on. Within the next few weeks Traveller pies, sausage rolls and garlic bread will increase marginally in price. We will not hesitate to bring these costs back down again should supply costs decrease but for now, it is simply not viable as a business to continue selling these items at current prices (Please note that Icy cups will remain at $1 each).
Remember that when you order through Flexischools, it means that your student will always get what they want and won’t miss out and they won’t have to wait long to pick up their order. Order before 8.30am on the day to make sure the order is received.
Uniform Shop
Parents / Caregivers – Appointments are no longer required so you’re welcome to come into the shop during business hours without an appointment.
Opening Hours during term time are Mon, Tues & Thurs: 8am - 10.30am
Please note your students are always welcome to come in on their own, whether it’s to pick up a Flexischools order, try on items or purchase. Sometimes they can be nervous about doing this but we’re always here to help them.
Flexischools Orders– Any orders placed can be picked up during our open hours only. We cannot leave them at the front office for pick up. If an item is not available online, it will also not be available in the shop.
Socks – We currently have very limited numbers of school socks available but they will be available again within the next few months.
Layby – Still available – 20% deposit. 8–10-week term. Come and see us in the shop for further information.
Second-hand Uniforms – We are changing our policy to further help our community. The new policy will mean your second-hand uniforms will be valued and paid out at $5, $10 or $15 maximum and they will be listed for sale for the same amount. A 30% administration fee will also be charged as this fee goes to help our students and school via our P&C Association.
Only CURRENT uniforms that are not stained or ripped will be accepted. We cannot accept old uniforms that are no longer current.
General – Thank you to all our lovely students, parents, and carers for your patience at the beginning of term when we are at our busiest. We know some of you had to wait for some time in the heat and we really do appreciate your understanding. Everyone we have had into the shop so far this year has been wonderful, and we do thank you all for that. Welcome to 2023!
Josai Uni Ikebukuro High School, Japan Study Tour Visit
Our Japanese studying students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to interact with students from Josai Uni Ikebukuro High School, Tokyo, Japan. Students participated in speaking-focused classes with our Year 10 and 12 Japanese classes. Activities involved identifying and discussing the use and impact of social media and connecting with peers, cultural comparison of Valentine’s Day through manga, Australia and Japan trivia competition and speed-dating.
As the photos indicate, the various activities were not only a great opportunity for our Year 10 and 12 Japanese students to use their Japanese, and for the Josai students to speak English, but also to create new international friendships.
Naturally, the students were a little shy at first, but they soon warmed up and had a wonderful time. International students enrich our Language lessons and we truly appreciate having them return to our school.

This year we are very excited to be working towards a big collaborative performance: The Addams Family. This show will be held in October and promises to be a wonderful event showcasing the work of all of our talented students. Stay tuned for more information throughout the year.
Badge Presentation Ceremony
Last week at the Badge Presentation Ceremony our Year 12 Instrumental Music students and our new Creative Arts Ambassadors were presented with their 2023 badges, acknowledging their leadership in the Creative Arts. Congratulations to all these student leaders and we look forward to a wonderful year ahead working with you in the Creative Arts! See below for some tips that our new Senior Ambassadors have given to our Year 7 students starting in the Creative Arts program.

Instrumental Music:
Welcome to new and continuing students for 2023!
We have enjoyed meeting our new Year 7 students over recent weeks. All students (7-12) have been placed into ensembles according to their instrument and level of instruction – we currently have ten ensembles which have started rehearsals. It quite often happens that, at the beginning of a new year, students reconsider their involvement in Instrumental Music. This is because the start of the year feels overwhelming to all of us, and the student looks for any avenue to relieve this anxiety. We believe that not only can your student handle the commitment involved in Instrumental Music, but that this commitment will improve your student’s schooling overall. We have seen this time and again – they learn structure, teamwork, creativity and much more from our program, and create lifelong memories.
Draft timetables and ensemble lists for Term 1 can be found on the noticeboard in the Performing Arts hallway, and have been emailed home by your teacher. Please check your spam folders for emails if you haven’t yet received an email. If your student’s name is not on any of the lists or if there is a query, please contact Mr Purnell via email (spurn1@eq.edu.au).
All Instrumental students will have a lesson with our instrumental staff:
- Mr Higgins – Percussion (Thursday)
- Ms Slater – Strings (Wednesday and Thursday)
- Ms Cleary - Woodwind, (Tuesday and Friday)
- Mr Purnell - Brass, Woodwind, Percussion (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday)
- Ms Wolfe – Woodwind (Monday)
Education Queensland provides lessons for Brass, Percussion, Strings and Woodwind instruments. Students are also welcome to join the Junior Choir (7-9) or Senior Choir (10-12) at any time: Junior Choir rehearsals are on Thursday mornings from 7.45am in P1 classroom, and Senior Choir also rehearses on Thursday mornings from 7.30am in P2. If interested in choir please contact Mrs Purnell (Senior) rmcdo6@eq.edu.au and Mrs McDuff (Junior) McDuffl@eq.edu.au.
Students who play or would like to play guitar or have singing lessons please contact the following staff about the user pay program. Aaron Andrews – aaron.tuition@gmail.com (guitar teacher), and Anita Taylor – aneedasoundcheck@gmail.com (singing teacher).

Extra-Curricular Options:
There are many extra-curricular Arts options available for students, in addition to the numerous music ensembles offered by the Instrumental Music Program. We are pleased to offer a Junior Art Club, Tech Crew (Sound, Lighting, Photography), Musical Theatre Troupe, numerous Dance Teams, Senior Acting Extension, Rock School and our new Senior Film Club. These groups are advertised in Daymap at the beginning of each year and have already made a start for 2023 – we look forward to seeing the great work they produce at events throughout the year! Please see the teachers in P block staffroom for further information about joining these activities, or email mcduffl@eq.edu.au.

Creative Generations:
The audition process for involvement in the annual Qld Creative Generations Showcase: State Schools on Stage is now well underway, with call-backs and casting auditions for choirs, dance and instrumentalists. Good luck to all instrumental, dance and choir students who are awaiting the results of their auditions. Tickets for the July show will be available to purchase in March.
Parent Support Group for Creative Arts:
Cleveland District State High School has a long and proud tradition in the Arts. We would not be able to present events of such quality without the support of our parent/guardian community. Our parents and guardians play an invaluable role in many ways:
- Fundraising
- Supporting our events
- Volunteering special skills (baking, sewing/dressmaking, etc.)
We call this group of legends CAST (Creative Arts Support Team), and would like you to consider joining the team! We will meet on an ad hoc basis, but you will be added to an email group which is a vital cog in the successful running of our events and programs this year.
If you would like to be part of this awesome group, please email our teacher aide Gail Bellas on gbell78@eq.edu.au.
Creative Arts in the Classroom:
Year 7 Creative Arts
Our Year 7 students are settling well into their Creative Arts classes. Throughout the semester the students will be experiencing a fun range of Creative Arts activities across Music, Media, Art, Dance and Drama. The year has begun with an exploration of Personal Identity, and the students have been enthusiastically engaged in a series of Visual Art activities. Keep up the great work Year 7s!

Year 11 Music and Year 11 Dance
Some of our classroom Music and Dance students had a wonderful performance experience when they were given the opportunity to perform for the entire school at our Whole School Assembly in Week 3. These fabulous student performances were enthusiastically enjoyed by the school community – what a talented bunch! Congratulations to our classroom Music and Dance students and their committed teachers.

Year 9, 11 and 12 Drama:
On Monday of Week 4, Drama students from Years 9, 11 and 12 got the opportunity to view a thought-provoking performance by Shock Therapy in preparation for assessment and skill building. Shock Therapy’s new and original work ‘Fuel’ tells the tale of Ivy and Seb, two people in a blossoming new relationship. However, this play takes a dark turn as it explores the complexity of toxic relationships, domestic violence and the patriarchal system.
‘Fuel’ employed a variety of Contemporary Theatre conventions such as digital media in the form of filmed video clips, sound effects and background music to engage their audience and communicate a powerful message about respectful relationships. Physical theatre elements were also utilised throughout the play in the form of Multiple roles, as the actors seamlessly flowed from one character to the next, using purposeful movements and voice techniques.
At the end of the performance, students were able to participate in a Q&A session with the actors, asking questions relating to both the content of the play as well as for some effective performance tips. Overall, students gained a deeper understanding of how the elements and conventions of Drama are used to communicate meaning about important issues whilst engaging in the wonderful world of live Theatre.

Student Point of View: Senior Creative Arts Ambassadors
Hi Year 7s, we're your Senior Creative Arts Ambassadors, Franki and Caelan, and we'd like to share some tips and tricks we've picked up on our fun-filled journey through the Creative Arts Program @ Cleveland:
- Don't be scared to perform in front of others - the more you do it, the less scary it'll be - plus, your peers are always there to support you, not judge.
- Always try to get involved - we have so many fun programs to try here at Cleveland, and you'll never know if you like it until you give it a go.
- Stay committed to the things you're passionate about - nothing is more fulfilling than seeing something through.
- Learn from others - our Senior students are always happy to give a helping hand to other students.
- Don't compare yourself to others - we are all on our own creative journey.
- Congratulate others on their successes - in the CDSHS Creative Arts Program, we always make sure to create a supportive environment for everyone.
And most importantly...
HAVE FUN!

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander News

We welcomed twenty five Year 7s this year and it has been a pleasure getting to know them. Jason Kitchener has joined Ms Dawkings in the Jandai class and students are learning Jandai while sharing about themselves and family. Welcome also to the students new to the school this year.
It was with great pleasure that we presented the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Ambassadors with their 2023 badges. We are pleased to formally recognise those students who have been contributing to the cultural footprint in the school and have been positive role models. Students who were successful in the nomination process have committed to fulling their role by
- Liaising with school and community groups
- Assisting in the organisation of school and community events
- Leading younger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in a mentor role
- Attending Embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Perspectives (EATSIPs) meetings.
Anika Anderson one of our Ambassadors and Junior Leaders said, “Being an ambassador means representing my culture. It also means encouraging younger students to represent their people and culture well. I enjoy connecting with the other ambassadors and learning their stories.”
Congratulations to Preston Ford, Isabella, Xavier Baira, Alyssa Mogg, Anika Anderson, Felisita Hola, Noah Tilmouth, Antonio Cavallaro, Georgia, Brianna Morrison. A double congratulations to Anika Anderson who received her badge as one of the Junior School leaders and congratulations to all the year 12s who received Senior badges as recognition of their leadership role in the school.
