From the Executive Principal's Desk

Dear Families

We’ve had a very positive and productive Term 2 with the vast majority of our students engaging in their studies successfully. We’ve also seen a significant increase in students participating in a wide range of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities that Cleveland District is proud to offer and has been an important part of our school’s history and culture.

Our new Engagement Centre and Outdoor area opened recently which has provided additional, world class facilities for students and staff. From the start of next term, our new Tuckshop opens which will be very exciting for our school offering a self-serve model. All three of these projects has been a partnership with our P & C who have contributed greatly to the funding and leadership of these new facilities.

This newsletter highlights a selection of great events that showcases our school’s culture and values.

I wish all students and staff a successful end of the term and a safe and relaxing break with their families.

Coffee with the Commissioners

On Monday morning 29 May, the School Captains (Malakai, Vanessa, Thomas and Charlee), Student Council Coordinator Ms Joni Edwards, and Executive Principal Mr Leonard McKeown attended ‘Coffee with Commissioners’. This event was organised by Mark Ryan Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services and held at SES Cleveland station. We had the opportunity to chat with Minister Ryan, Alex from Cleveland’s SES branch and Ms Kim Richards our local member for Redlands. It was an informal get together, a chance to mingle with people from both the government and locals working for the different emergency services.

The School Captains and Ms Edwards were given a tour of a fire truck at Cleveland Fire Station by Ari who is one of the wonderful fire people stationed at Cleveland.

International Student Program: Term 2

As we prepare to bid farewell to some of our international students who have been part of the Cleveland District State High School community for anywhere from one term to a whole year, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for the incredible contribution they have made to our school. Frida, Emma, Elise, Vitoria, Sanna, Keywana, Barbara, Finja, Giulia, Giorgia, Antonia, Anna, Greta, Bastian, Fred, John, Keywana and Achille have brought their unique global perspectives into our classrooms, enabling us all to become more global citizens.

We know that bidding farewell to friends, teachers, classmates, and homestay families will be tough, but we want you to know that you are always welcome back at CDSHS. We are excited to see where your lives will take you and the career paths you will pursue.

We appreciate all that you have done to enrich our school community, and we wish you all the best of luck as you return to your home countries and families. You will be missed, but we will always remember the special memories and experiences we shared together.

From the entire CDSHS family, thank you, and farewell.

The Cairn’s Trip

It gives us great pleasure to share the details of the recent international student trip to Cairns. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for our students to explore a different culture, build friendships and create unforgettable memories.

The students left from outside the international building at 4 am, caught the 6.30am flight to Cairns and their first stop was the Karanda Sky Rail and Karanda markets. Students then spent the rest of the day at the Rainforestation Nature Park, where they had the opportunity to handle Australian animals. In the evening, the students explored the vibrant Cairns Night Markets before returning to their lodgings at Crystal Cascades.

The highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the Franklin Island reef, where the students spent the day learning how to snorkel, and enjoying various activities such as, the beach walk with the botanist and paddle boarding. The next day, they visited the Hartley Crocodile Adventures and enjoyed an exciting day out in Port Douglas.

On the final day of the trip, the students visited Mareeba Coffee Works and savoured delicious local coffee. The day ended with a swimming in Lake Eacham, an ancient volcano crater lake.

We would like to extend our gratitude to all the students for their incredible sense of humour, positive energy, and exemplary conduct throughout the trip. Such excursions foster intercultural exchange, enhance the students' academic experience, and prepare them for diverse settings.

Overall, it was a successful trip that not only provided an excellent learning opportunity but also enriched the students' lives with unforgettable experiences.

Inaugural CDSHS Internal Debate Competition

Our very own Internal Debate competition is in full swing, with two out of the seven regular season rounds now completed, and many exciting clashes have occurred so far. Each year level is being represented, with two teams representing years 8, and 10 and the Seniors (11&12).

Current standings are as below, with five rounds to go.

The first two rounds of debates have seen some truly incredible debates:

Round 1 saw our youngest team clash with a full - strength senior team and nearly come away with the win, as well as an exciting encounter between two of our more experienced teams that saw 10.2 defeat Senior.2 in another close match.

Round 2 was not to be outdone by Round 1, with assessment fatigue and illness working its way through most teams and leaving many teams under-strength but still competing. Of note were single person teams for both senior teams attempting to take on the in-form year 8 teams, but ultimately falling short in a gutsy performance.

Round 3 will see a top of table clash between the top of table - 8.1s and 8.2s when school resumes.

New Subject for Year 9: Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education is a new subject to year 9 in 2023.  Forty-five Outdoor Education students had a day of orienteering in the Brisbane Koala Bushland Reserve on the 30th of May.  Students have been learning navigation skills using a compass to shoot bearings, reading topographic maps to recognise landforms and to select the most appropriate routes, and use of two-way radios to communicate over distances.  Students were in small groups and challenged to use these skills to navigate to specific markers and in a specific order and return to the base within a two hour period. Students are commended for showing great teamwork and problem solving abilities as they navigated the course.

Leadership Day 2023 Overview

On the 24 of May, our school had the privilege of attending the Ylead - 2023 Altitude day in the Brisbane city hall. All the Junior School Student Leaders were invited to attend and spend the day learning about what it means to be a leader, listening to aspirational real-life stories, and got an opportunity to meet and interact with hundreds of other people from all around Brisbane.

Our day began with a ‘getting to know you’ activity which allowed us to open our minds to all the new perspectives and fresh ideas that came from the people of the different schools that we met. We were then introduced to the idea of potential and how important it is to acknowledge it. Something that we all took away from the session is the potential keys and steps to lead you to become the best version of yourself. After a short break, we dove straight into it and got to hear stories from three amazing guest speakers that found an issue in our world and worked hard to change it. This was not only inspiring, but eye opening to realise that we can do whatever we set our minds to. To end the day, we got to all come together and practice our new dance moves altogether on the stage.

Overall, apart from being very fun, this day was an amazing opportunity to unlocking our potential and physically being able to see and experience the impacts and ideas that our generation can and will have on the world and other people. We were lucky to run into Ex 2018 School Captain Connor Martinuzzo who was YLEAD volunteer.

Future of Education Survey

Dear School Community

My name is Peter Kington and I am an electorate officer for The Hon Senator Murray Watt (Qld).

Senator Watt is the government’s nominated duty Senator for the federal electoral division of Bowman, and I am writing today to bring to your school community’s attention the recently announced Future of Education survey.

You may be aware that the Australian Government has established an Expert Panel to inform the next National School Reform Agreement.

This week the Expert Panel is releasing a survey to get the views of teachers, parents and students so those directly involved in the education system get a say in how we make it better and fairer.

Survey participants will be able to have their say on range of issues including:

  • Improving education outcomes
  • Supporting student mental health and wellbeing, and
  • Attracting and retaining teachers.

The Expert Panel, led by Dr Lisa O’Brien AM, will report to Education Ministers at the end of October on the practical reforms that should be tied to funding in the next National School Reform Agreement.

This anonymous survey will be open until Friday, 23 June 2023. See link below.

As Senator Watt’s eyes and ears in Bowman, I would also welcome the opportunity to meet with you to discuss how the federal Government can create a better and fairer education system.  If I can be of any support to you or your school community please reply email or contact me on the numbers below.

This term our Chinese students were learning about Chinese cuisine. As part of the authentic experience, we organised an incursion for students to enjoy some yummy Chinese dishes prepared by Golden Corner Asian Restaurant at Cleveland. Students had the chance to experience Honey Chicken, Black Bean Beef, Sweet and Sour Pork and Chinese Dumplings. A huge thanks to Ms Li for organising this amazing opportunity.

Connected Business Breakfast: Liveability on the Redlands Coast

On the 14th of June, members of the Senior Student Council Ivan Lai, Shae Kirkpatrick, Mehedi Shaikh and Montosh Rana had the honour of being invited to a breakfast event hosted by the Redlands Coast Chamber of Commerce. Year 9 Business Venture – Mr Hanson’s Class

On Tuesday as part of their assessment Year 9 Business students had to plan, organise and set up a business venture and make a profit. They had a marketing plan and organised their own advertising, recipes and ingredients. It turned out to be a very popular event with huge queues. All profits are donated to The Brain Foundation, a charity of the students’ choosing.

Creative Arts Newsletter

It has been another big semester in Creative Arts, with lots of exciting activities and performances enjoyed by our students.  Best wishes to all for a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to continuing the great work in Semester 2!

Our faculty has fielded a number of questions around subject selection for Junior and Senior students.  If you have questions about a particular subject, please email Mr Watson on swats176@eq.edu.au and he will forward your query to the relevant person.  Your student is also more than welcome to come to the staffroom to ask us about our fantastic range of subjects!  We believe we have something for everyone in the Creative Arts, and we strongly believe that a successful student is one who chooses subjects that they are (a) passionate about and (b) have some aptitude for.

Creative Generations: State Schools on Stage

The count-down is on for our excited C-Gen performers, who are now entering the final weeks of preparation for what will undoubtedly be another magnificent showcase of Queensland State School talent.  Tickets are on sale through Ticketek for performances at the Convention Centre in the first week of Term 3.  We wish our student performers and teachers involved all the best for this upcoming extravaganza!  You can purchase tickets for this show via the link below:

Concert on the Green

It was a cold and windy June afternoon, but our music community was steadfast in their support of our young musicians at this year’s Concert on the Green.  Crowds turned out in force and enjoyed a wonderful afternoon of music from all of our Instrumental and Choral ensembles.  The forecast rain held off, and the only thunder to be heard was the rolling timpani in our awesome Percussion and Wind Ensembles and the applause of appreciative audiences.  For our Year 7 students, new to the program, this was their first performance together and they did themselves proud.  Hosted by our Senior and Junior Creative Arts Ambassadors, this concert was a great opportunity for our older and younger students to appreciate and support the ensemble work of each other.  Congratulations and thank you to all student performers, teachers and tech crew who made the day a success, to our Europe Fund Raising Team for feeding us, and to our audience of supporters for cheering us on!

Art Club – Worm Farm Mural

Our Art Club has been working hard over many months to create a mural for our Worm Farm and the final result is spectacular!  The intricate creative detail that these young artists have added to this mural makes it a truly engaging work of art – even the sheep have been enthralled!  Thank you, Art Club students and teachers for making our school a more beautiful and fun place to be.  We look forward to seeing the end result of your next project - creating sets and props for our Addams Family Show!

Film Club

Cleveland District State High School’s film club is a co-curricular club formed by a passionate community of filmmakers and film-lovers. This year, these students have been working on several projects for our school community. The latest involved an induction of our brand-new school Tuckshop, which was presented to the whole school through our year level parades. Well done to this fantastic team. We look forward in seeing what you produce next!

Rock Arvo

Congratulations to our Rockschool musicians, Year 11 band, Amplify and Year 10 student Brax who put on another great concert last Friday to an entertained audience of family and friends.  Audiences enjoyed an eclectic mix of tunes from artists such as the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Billy Joel and Billie Eilish, as well as some original tunes by Brax.  Well done students – rock on!

Year 8 Creative Arts

Our Year 8 students have been finishing up their semester of study in Creative Arts with a sneak peek at what the Year 12s do in their Arts electives.  The Year 8s have been to music concerts by the Year 12 Music Extension students, visited a Year 12 Dance class to watch choreography in action, toured the Art Galleries and watched a selection of Year 12 Films.  We hope they have enjoyed their Arts experiences this semester and look forward to seeing many of these students in elective subjects in the coming years.  Our Creative Arts Ambassadors and Senior students have done a video for our Junior students to show them how awesome it is to study Arts electives at CDSHS.  Please watch it using the following link: https://youtu.be/GzyUDJIIz2M

Year 9 Dance

Year 9 Dance have just finished their Musical Theatre unit where they studied a variety of different Musical Theatre pieces from the past to the present. For assessment the students worked in groups to choreograph a piece to a Musical Theatre song of their choice. The Musicals they chose ranged from Aladdin, Chicago and Mamma Mia! to The Greatest Showman and Mean Girls. The students worked exceptionally well on this task and created very entertaining pieces!!!  Keep up the great work Year 9s!

Year 10 Music in Practice

Our Music in Practice students have been immersed in performing and composing activities this semester, and finished off the term with a fun performance showcase – even once assessment is over they are keen to just keep doing what they love!  The variety of performances was great to hear. Well done students - keep making beautiful music!

Student Point of View: Year 7 Creative Arts Students

The Year 7 Music Extension class was asked to reflect on their first semester of High School – what they have enjoyed generally about school, and specifically with regards to their Creative Arts experiences.  We are pleased to report that the Year 7s were overwhelmingly positive about their first semester of high school. These are just some of the things they had to say:

Tayla: My first semester has been incredible.  Creative Arts has been my absolute favourite subject, and having so many opportunities has been a dream come true.  One of my passions is singing and Cleveland has given me many times to do so.  I love Cleveland’s Creative Arts program.

Lucille: The first semester of my high school was full of fun, happiness and wonderful people.  The thing I enjoyed most was making new wonderful friends that make me feel included and happy.  The creative arts classes are very enjoyable and fun.  I love the drama and art side of creative arts especially.  CDSHS is a wonderful school.

Hunter: I like how most of the teachers are fun and how most of the work is easy.  Creative Arts was very fun and I loved the activities we did.

Milly: I have enjoyed being able to have more freedom and being able to meet new people and make strong relationships.  I have enjoyed being in a band and ensemble and playing the saxophone.  I’m glad I came to CDSHS because I wouldn’t have had so many opportunities anywhere else.

Summer:  I have absolutely loved high school here at Cleveland High.  The teachers are wonderful, the school programs are amazing because I get so many opportunities, especially in the creative arts program because I can improve playing the French horn and violin.  I’ve been playing the French Horn since year 4 and since I’ve been at high school I have improved a lot.  We made a piece of music this semester and it was so much fun.  We had to test our creativity and our knowledge of the elements of music.  Thank you Cleveland High for this amazing experience.

Gurnoor:  I have enjoyed being a part of the orchestra and the extension program.  I have been grateful for this opportunity and experience.  I like doing lessons and ensembles in strings because I feel included and equal in them.  I would love to be in extension creative arts again next year.

Noah: I have loved my first semester at CDSHS.  My main highlight of the year has been playing my trumpet in the Creative Arts extension class.  I went from only enjoying the art part of Creative Arts to loving all of it.  I loved how we were able to write our own piece of music.  The drama part of Creative Arts is incredible and even the theory is good!

Penni: I have enjoyed the journey to high school with all the amazing new opportunities I can take.  This semester I have learned new awesome things and met many new people.  Being a part of the Creative Arts Year 7 extension group has made me a much better player and has boosted my confidence.

Jessica: I have loved getting to know the new people that I will most likely spend the rest of my years at CDSHS with.  I 100% enjoyed playing at the Concert on the Green – it was so fun.

Dexter: It was good.  I got to be with friends and to play drama games.  It was good!

Enea: I have enjoyed the first semester except for the assessments and the uniforms.  Creative Arts has been fun!

Alice:  This year so far has been a blast!  I have made so many new friends through Creative Arts!  I love everyone in it and I especially love the teachers.  I’m really looking forward to the dance and drama unit!

Havana:  I loved coming here because I get to see lots of lovely teachers and I get to do something that I love, which is music and Arts.  The best part of doing it is finishing and seeing the final results and also performing on stage.

Reconciliation Week

Students were active participants in our Reconciliation Week activities  enacting the theme for this year: Be a Voice for Generations that encourages all Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in tangible ways in our everyday lives – where we live, work and socialise. Students were part of the next steps in Australia’s reconciliation journey by creating posters to share the message and inform fellow students of significant dates in Australia’s often hidden history. Posters displaying words such as justice, equity, wisdom, representation, empowerment, change  and allyship were proudly displayed.  Students added comments to a Reconciliation board and many wrote reconciliation letters to family or friends as a process and letting go of situations. They also had an opportunity to write about guilt or resentment in a way that allowed them to turn darkness to light and place in the Sorry box.

NAIDOC – For Our Elders

NAIDOC preparations and celebrations have started with dancers rehearsing traditional dances from Quandamooka Country and three of our students being awarded South East Region NAIDOC Junior Secondary Student Academic Excellence awards. Lilly Hammant (The Arts) Award, Lillith Jones Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Award and Emily Hanslow (English) Award. We congratulate them on their excellent results and for being worthy role models for their peers.

Students are looking forward to participating in celebratory events at Dunwich and at our school in term 3. Student and family may also like to participate in community events over the holidays.

Cleveland High School also participated in the South East Region Showcase – a celebration of culture and art by embedding Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander perspectives in their schools and curriculum

Little Friends Scholarships

Imagine you’re a child who has suddenly lost your home and all your possessions because you’ve had to flee domestic or family violence. Imagine how alone this child feels, the trauma they’ve experienced. Like every other child, they not only want to feel safe, secure and loved, but they also don’t want to unexpectedly stand out from the crowd. Made to feel different because they no longer have a uniform, or school shoes, or their parent can’t afford to pay for a laptop , school excursions, the long awaited school camp, or they’ve had to drop out of the music lessons or sporting competitions they once attended.

This is where the Little Friends Scholarship Program comes in to support our youngest Australians who have been through so much. An initiative of Friends with Dignity, these valuable scholarships fund education and extracurricular activities for five to 18-year-olds, putting children affected by violence on an equal footing with their peers.

The program runs biannually in Term 1 and Term 3, with Round 13 applications opening on 10th July 2023. In the previous funding round, 94 children received scholarship funding, bringing the total funds awarded to date since the commencement of this program to $333,477.

Two scholarships are guaranteed to be awarded per state or territory, with the remaining balance being awarded on an ‘as needs basis’. Scholarships are up to a maximum value of $500 per child.

Once again Friends with Dignity is about to open applications for our
Little Friends Scholarship Program.

Applications open on Monday 10th July 2023

Applications close 4pm (QLD Time) Friday 4th August 2023

If you have families within your school community who are financially disadvantaged due to domestic and family violence, we encourage you to inform and support these families to apply for a Little Friends Scholarship to assist them with the cost of educational and extra-curricular expenses.
