Principal's Report

Dear Families

The start of Term 3 brings the return of many regular school events and routines. Most excursions are going forward at COVID safe locations and sport is also restarting with additional procedures to ensure COVID safe guidelines are being implemented. Opportunities for creative arts performances are also being investigated. Students and staff are very much looking forward to this.

We were able to start the term with year level parades, which we missed during Term 2. These are important to emphasise significant aspects of school routines, share opportunities and celebrate success. Our Engagement Staff prepared and presented to each year level in a very professional and positive manner to ensure a good start to the term.

Currently, we are limiting adult entry onto the school campus, which is a requirement of the Queensland Government’s COVID policy. This has meant that the school is investigating other ways to conduct the main Term 3 events, which includes Subject Selection Night. We will communicate details of these changes when they are finalised.

I look forward to a productive term with students and staff.

International Student Program

This term, the CDSHS International Student Program welcomes Owen from China to the Senior Graduate Program. Owen has been up-skilling in English at the Whites Hill High School Preparation Program before joining us at CDSHS. Many of our Asian students who strive to attain a Queensland Certificate of Education begin their education pathway at White’s Hill. When their proficiency level is high enough in the four macro skills of Standard Australian English they are permitted to transfer to our mainstream core program. Welcome Owen! We are proud of the way in which you have managed to navigate our enormous campus this week. Good Luck with your studies.

The final day of term two was a fun event with our European students bidding us a happy farewell. Please enjoy photos of their final moments at CDSHS as they take their last photos with their Aussie mates.

Would you like to be a CDSHS homestay family?

The Cleveland District State High School International Student Program is always recruiting homestay families for both long-term and short-term stay students.

A ‘homestay’ is a private home accepting overseas students to live as part of their family. It is not a matter of simply renting out a room in your house. You are effectively the student’s ‘parent’ whilst they are studying at CDSHS. Host families can be an individual, couple or family and preferably located within the school catchment area with easy access to public transport.  All members of host families aged 18 years and over require a valid Blue Card for Working with Children and this can be arranged through the school at no cost.

CDSHS long-term homestay testimony:

‘Hosting international students from all over the world has enriched our lives forever. Through building strong relationships with young people from different cultural backgrounds we now have the inside gossip on, how to drive a dog sled effectively in the snow in Norway, and where to find the best gelato in Venice! However, homestay is more much more than funny stories. It is an opportunity for young people to become citizens of the world and for our own Australian children to grow tolerance, cultural understanding and acceptance. Put simply, the CDSHS homestay program has been the best part of our own family adventure.’

HOST FAMILIES RECEIVE TAX FREE PAYMENT FOR HOSTING BOTH LONG AND SHORT TERM STUDENTS

For more information on hosting International Students, please contact                                         our Homestay Coordinator at:

Year 9 Global Leadership Program

For more than 8 years now, CDSHS has run the Global Impact Leadership Program (previously known as High Resolves) for interested Year 9 students. It is designed to appeal to students who wish to develop as global citizens and leaders. In conjunction with the Unleashing Personal Potential organisation, the Global Impact Leadership Program motivates and empowers young people to make a difference and resolve issues in their community.

The program involves a variety of activities during Year 9 including an intensive one-day program which engages students in developing their leadership skills as well as their ability to get large groups of people to engage in collective action.

This year, CDSHS is offering this program free of charge. Students wishing to be considered for this program are required to submit a one paragraph written application outlining their desire to be a part of the program to Mr Engel, in the M Block Engagement Centre, by Wednesday 29th July.

Student applications can highlight various points that include, but are not limited to:

  • Involvement in the school community (eg. Debating, Performing Arts, Chaplaincy Committee, Sport, Athletics Carnivals, Student Council, Show Team etc.)
  • What qualities they would bring to this leadership program
  • Personal leadership areas or qualities they would like to enhance
  • Global Issues they are passionate about

We look forward to reading your applications.

Junior Academy of Modern Languages Online Course

During the June/July holidays, Hannah Villani (Year 12), Isabelle Miller and Aletta Fehr (Year 10), Montash and Ivan (Year 8) and Kaylah (Year 7) were successful applicants  participating in a Junior Academy of Modern Languages course conducted by Global Opportunities, DE International in partnership with James Cook University Townsville. The 5-day online course offered an opportunity for the students to, explore the world using virtual reality, experience second language immersion and develop digital literacy. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and gained a new appreciation of how technology can improve people’s lives whilst utilising and improving their languages skills. Their feedback included the following:

“What I appreciated the most through the learning during the French holiday course from James Cook University was the opportunity to extend my French skills. Specifically, the assistance from the teacher and their feedback at not only a language perspective, but also a global perspective about the topic, technology in our lives.” - Ivan Lai

“There were interesting cultures that we talked about and not just the French cultures but also the English, Indonesian and others. We talked about the Pacific Countries and their importance to our culture. My favourite part was working on the story in French because it was a challenge that I had never done before so it was quite exciting for me. Thank you so much for the opportunity to attend this course.” - Kaylah MacHunter

“I think in the short time that I spent learning Japanese with these people from across Queensland, I was able to enjoy learning Japanese just as much as if I were in the classroom because it gave me the chance to study alongside people with different experiences and levels of knowledge in the language. We were challenged to learn new vocabulary, consider how to write things in different ways to what we were already familiar with, and to apply knowledge we had previously gained to the lessons from our individual school classes as we wrote a small script outlining different things about our homes in Japanese.” – Hannah Villani

Congratulations to these students for taking the initiative to undertake this course, which has undoubtedly enriched their knowledge and understanding of French and Japanese.

Academic Excellence Program

Cleveland District State High School has a proud tradition of Preparing Students to Meet the Future.  One of the ways we do this is to provide opportunities for students to excel in their chosen pathway.  For students who are extremely motivated and achieve high academic results, we provide an Academic Excellence Program from Year 7 onwards.  The aim of the program is to provide  students with learning experiences which challenge their thinking and ensure they have engaging opportunities to bring out their academic best.  Places in this program are limited and are awarded to the students who perform well in the entrance exams, combined with positive effort and behaviour comments on their report cards from their primary school.  These exams are open to families both within and out of our catchment area.

This year, we are using Edutest to administer and assess our entrance exams.  Edutest is an Australian educational assessment organisation that provides quality assessments and services to over 100 independent and government schools around the country.  Their team provides thorough diagnostic testing and reporting feedback to parents and students.

The test will take place on Saturday, 29 August at 9am.  It will assess students against a range of skills in numeracy, literacy, reading comprehension and writing.  Families who wish to apply for a place for their student in the Year 7 Academic Excellence program in 2021 are required to register for the entrance exam via the below link and pay the $75 fee (plus GST).

Once registered, we will be in touch with further details about the organisation of the day, in particular, the COVID safe plan we will have in place.  If your student would like to prepare themselves for the test, please visit the Edutest website for practice tests via the link below.

This year, we are pleased to announce we will award scholarships to the students whose results place them in the top five participants.  The scholarships will cover the annual school fees for 2021.

Junior Engagement Centre

During Week 1, Years 7, 8 & 9 used their parade times to remind students of the high standards CDSHS is proud of and expect from all students in and out of the classroom at all times.

The focus of the presentations was about ‘Respect’ and 'how' and 'what' respecting yourself and others looks like at CDSHS.

The key messages that students were given include:

  • Uniform and the importance of upholding of high expectations of dress codes. We love our uniform and we believe students should feel proud when their uniform is perfect. We reminded students of the importance of; wearing black, leather shoes as part of workplace health and safety; only having one set of plain studs, or sleepers for earrings; and considering it is getting cold, a school jumper. We restated our policy around uniform at Cleveland- if a student is in the incorrect uniform they are to report to the M-Block Engagement Centre with a note. If students don’t come to see an Assistant Dean in the morning, lunchtime detentions will be issued.
  • Appropriate mobile phone use. We reinforced our ‘no phones in the classroom’ policy to our students. This is purely for the benefit of student engagement. Last term we used some of our Access time to discuss the dangers of mobile phone addiction and the negative effects it can have on attention and focus. Students were reminded of this and we believe  students keeping phone use out of the classroom will have a plethora of positive outcomes.
  • Lastly, we reminded students that Cleveland District State High School prides itself on our ICARE philosophy and in particular, the RESPECT component. We don’t expect everyone to be the smartest, the sportiest, or the funniest, but we do expect everyone to try to be the friendliest and kindest version of themselves. Respect at our school includes: speaking to teachers appropriately and following their instructions; speaking to our friends and others appropriately; allowing the best chance of success for everyone (including themselves) in the classroom by working hard and paying attention; and being prepared for each day.

Senior School Update - Years 10-12

Welcome back senior students!  It was lovely to see everyone back at school and also to catch up face-to-face at our first year level parades in months.  Over the last few days, we have been busy reflecting over report card data and have been incredibly impressed by the positive achievements of our students.   We're also aiming to assist those senior students who need to make some changes to their current Senior Pathway in the coming week.  Please feel free to drop into A Block to have a chat with one of the Senior Engagement Hub team, should you need help or clarification around subjects or QCE attainment.

Year 10s

We’d also like to give a special welcome to the Year 10 students, who as of Semester 2 fall under the Senior School umbrella.  We look forward to working with our year 10s ensuring they are achieving and succeeding in their senior schooling years.  Mr Brown has made the move up to A Block and will be available for any of your usual enquiries, as are any of our other senior schooling team members.

Uniform

Now that we are truly feeling the cold hand of winter, we would like to remind all senior students about the CDSHS winter uniform.

The policy can be found on the school website via the link following this article.

In particular, we would like to reiterate students are expected to wear sports OR formal uniform depending on their sporting commitments. Mixing the two uniforms together is not allowed. With regards to jumpers, only school jumpers can be worn at school. Hoodies are not allowed, including those that may be associated with the school (i.e. snow trip/sports team etc). We encourage students to visit  the Senior Engagement Hub before school if there are any uniform issues. Please bring a note from a parent/guardian explaining the reasons.

Congratulations to the following Year 12 students who completed their Diploma of Business this month: Alina Eather, Ben Jenkins, Bronti Thompson, Charlotte Tennant, Conor Conneely, Ethan Molloy, Hans Sasis, Hayley Nash, Keenan Krueger, Lilly Cairns, Matt Willett, Owen Grahame, Rebecca Fintelman, Remy Tal-Trieger. These students have attended school on their Monday Options Day since February 2019 to work through their units of competency. Year 10 Business

Year 10 Business students celebrated the end of Term 2 by hosting an International Morning Tea.  It was a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge of international business, by representing different countries from all around the world.  Students prepared a brief presentation, shared cuisine and business etiquette from their chosen country.  It was a wonderful (and tasty) learning experience for students.

Alumni News

Former student, Jordan Azcune, is making some serious waves in the art community.  Jordan is working predominantly in sculpture, and has received two grants totalling $30,000 in the last week or so.  He will be visiting Hyderabad as a recipient of the Lord Mayor's Young and Emerging Artists Fellowships 2020, which is an incredible opportunity.  After being invited by HASSELL Architects Brisbane Studio to develop a two week public solo exhibition for their studio space as part of the 2019 Asia Pacific Architecture Forum, other opportunities emerged for Jordan; a month-long residency and open studio at the The Walls artspace (Gold Coast), a group exhibition at the Brisbane Quarter, a public artwork commission at Home of the Arts, Gold Coast and an international residency in Miami, Florida to develop a solo show at The Walls.  Congratulations, Jordan – we are very proud to have helped develop your passion for art at CDSHS!

To read more about Jordan, click on the two links following this article.

This week, just under 50 students auditioned for Cleveland High’s new Musical Theatre Troupe, with plenty of exciting talent on show.  Miss Symeou would like to congratulate and thank all students for bringing such quality to the auditions. The Musical Theatre Troupe are looking forward to kicking off rehearsals in Week 3.

Year 7 Creative Arts students have been learning about stop motion and media.  They created short stop motion films using everyday objects and have produced some excellent work.  Year 11 Music in Practice students have been learning about the various ways you can write a song – using notation software, in groups jamming over chords, or by yourself!  Senior Dance Team students produced a fantastic music video with the assistance of our hardworking and passionate teachers.  Mrs Murray choreographed the dance, and Mrs Hunter filmed and edited the video together.  We hope to debut this video soon, so keep an eye out!

Year 12 Media Arts in Practice students produced some high-quality games and animations which represented our local Quandamooka culture.  Year 12 Music Extension students are working hard to prepare for their next task, to be presented at the Music Extension Concert on August 13.  Last term, students in Year 10 Visual Arts in Practice completed their ceramic tile and are now working on the Textile unit. This unit will involve all different skills around textiles including sewing, dyeing, felting and weaving. They will also be looking at the importance of these techniques from different cultures around the world. Students are enjoying working on their weaving projects, which have been inspired by the seasons.

Concerts in Semester 2

The Creative Arts Faculty is working hard on a way to present our usual concerts in Semester 2.  We have Music Extension Concert, FAMED, Dance Fusion, Music Showcase and Music Industry Concert coming up, and while we may not be able to present these concerts in the same way, we will do our best to allow our talented students the opportunity to share their gifts.  More details to follow.

Online Music Program

CDSHS Instrumental music students continued their online music program through teachers commenting on videos/audio sent in over last terms lockdown. Platforms used have included Email, OneNote and keeping in touch with Blackboard, Teams and the Learning Place. Here is a snapshot of our talented students:

P & C News

It’s been a while between P&C meetings due to Covid-19 so the P&C Executive is looking forward to next Tuesday night (July 28th @7pm) for the first meeting able to be locked in since the AGM back in February.

Tuckshop

Every Thursday and Friday the Tuckshop adds a little extra to the menu to provide the students with variety and choice. These specials prove very popular with the students. Check out the school Facebook page on a Monday to see what specials are available for that week and don’t forget they can be ordered online through Flexischools (before 8.45 am on the day) or over the counter before school starts in the morning.

Sushi is back on the menu!

Remember, if your student has any special dietary requirements please feel free to contact the Tuckshop on 38249214 to discuss meal options available to suit these dietary needs.

Finally, the Tuckshop is trying to cut down on the use of cutlery and is changing to more eco friendly options which unfortunately will come at an increased cost. If your student is bringing food to school that requires cutlery, please remember it’s BYO cutlery as the Tuckshop will need to charge a small fee to provide if requested.

Uniform Shop

Uniform Shop normal business hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday     8am – 10.30am.

Winter stock still available so come instore or order online if you need any winter items.

With some stock now running low and supplies not due for delivery again until towards the end of the year, if you see a size online that is not available this will be the same instore. However, do remember there is a small assortment of second hand items still available and we will do our best to fit your student in something so, if unsure, please get them to come in and try on.

A heads up for next year! The impact of the current worldwide pandemic is being felt in every level of business in some form or another and this includes the uniform supply chain. From next year ,there will be a slight increase in some uniform items as a result of the increases in production costs etc. We will do our best to keep any price increases to a minimum but unfortunately it is an unavoidable situation.

If you have a child starting in 2021, do remember you can order items before the end of year using our layby system.  The terms are as follows: 15% deposit for a period of up to 90 days, with a $5 non-refundable service fee.
