From the Executive Principal's Desk

Dear Families

A very warm welcome to the 2024 school year at Cleveland District State High School. I’d like to extend a special welcome to new families and students to our school community. Our enrolment has continued to increase and is currently 2384. The popularity of Cleveland District State High School continues to grow, evidenced by the significant number of additional enrolment applications that we were not able to accept. Our school’s reputation is very strong from our culture, our rich history, our high expectations and care of students, our subject offerings and being recognised and accredited as an international school. We strive everyday to achieve our vision of ‘Preparing Students to Meet the Future”.

Our priorities for 2024 are to continue to improve our school’s performance to ensure our students are on a pathway for success. This is achieved through the three pillars of the new Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Strategic Plan. These are:

  • Educational Achievement
  • Wellbeing and Engagement
  • Culture and Inclusion

What this means at Cleveland District is that we will focus our efforts and resources to improve learning programs, opportunities, wellbeing and support for our students, staff and community.

Recently, we received our school’s Year 12 results from 2023. I’m very happy to let you know that all of our students received a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA) or Vocational Education and Training (VET) Certificate. This is a remarkable achievement and will allow our students to be on a successful pathway post high school. Our results are among the best in Queensland and we can be very proud of that. Given that we’re also one of the largest state schools in Queensland this is something to celebrate. I congratulate students and staff for this result. Our ATAR, IB and Vocational Educational results were very high across the board. This demonstrates the success of our unique three-year senior school program with four distinct pathway options.

Our school staff look forward to working with you so every student has a successful pathway through high school and beyond.

I wish all students a successful start to the year.

Our School Review - an opportunity to have your say

The Department of Education regularly reviews Queensland state schools and our school is scheduled for a review this year.

Our school has been selected to undertake a school-led review which will enable us as a school community to lead the reflection on what is working well and what we could be doing better. We will use the information from this review to inform the next school strategic plan.

Information from our school-led review will also be shared with other schools so that they can learn from our successes.

A school-led review consists of 2 phases:

  • evaluation conducted by the school
  • validation conducted by School and Region Reviews (SRR).

Firstly, across Terms 1 and 2 2024, we will be conducting our own evaluation. This will include speaking with staff, parents and key stakeholders. We will use the School Improvement Tool as an independent guide for the evaluation and report.

Following the school-led review, the department’s SRR branch will validate the school’s evaluation. Members of the branch will visit our school towards the end of Term 2, to engage in conversations with a cross-section of staff, students, parents and community members. They will also analyse key data sets and peruse a range of key documents to produce a report for our school community.

Key findings from the review will be made available to parents and the community on our school website.

We would like to hear from our community throughout both phases of the review. Your feedback is important and will help us continue to deliver a great education for our students. This community feedback will be managed through our School Council and P&C.

More information about the review process is available from the department’s website at www.schoolreviews.education.qld.gov.au.

Creative Arts Update

Creative Arts Newsletter

Welcome back to the Creative Arts in 2024!  We are looking forward to another great year of creative endeavours in our programs and are excited to introduce you to our Creative Arts Ambassadors for this year. These students play a vital role in promoting the Creative Arts at CDSHS and have been chosen based on their many wonderful qualities. They have demonstrated a high level of commitment to the Creative Arts, as well as leadership and initiative through their involvement in our programs, from Performing Arts to Visual Arts, but, most of all, they are talented and passionate about what we do.  This year our Junior Ambassadors are (from left) Ellie Baker and Emi Davis, and our Senior Ambassadors are Kobi Strand, Cody O’Toole and Teagan Bentley-Gibbons.  Congratulations students!

Year 12 Results, 2023:

We are pleased to be able to report outstanding results for our Year 12s in 2023 across Creative Arts subjects, with every General Arts subject reporting students who received scores of 90 or higher.  Examples include a perfect 100 score in Music Extension (Performance) with 6 other Music Extension students receiving scores over 90, 7 General Music students with scores over 90 and 2 with top results of 97, and both Dance and Drama with 3 students attaining scores over 90, with one Dance student achieving a score of 98 and our top Drama student achieving a score of 97.  These excellent results are a testimony to the quality of work being produced by our students, facilitated by our teachers.  Congratulations to our year 12 cohort from 2023, and best wishes for the next stage of your journey.  We are happy to have helped you in some small way, and love to hear what you are up to!  See below an email from one of our excited Year 12s from 2023 – we are so glad to being able to support a range of pathways after school and pleased that the strategy of choosing subjects that a student likes or has an interest in, does translate to positive results.

“I just wanted to share with you that I got an early acceptance offer into ACU for a double bachelor in paramedicine and nursing! So pretty exciting that I start uni at the end of February! So, thank you for helping me get through my final year of schooling, tbh I literally probably wouldn’t have been able to do it without you guys because music, drama and mus extension all boosted my ATAR!”

Instrumental Music

All Instrumental lessons and Ensembles have started and our ensembles are already making great progress.  Congratulations to Jazz Collective who have performed already at last week’s Badge Presentation Ceremony. Only three rehearsals and already they are sounding great!

Please check your emails regarding information about Instrumental lessons and ensembles. If you are new to the school and would like to start or continue learning, please see staff in Performing Arts or email our Instrumental Music Coordinator, Mr Shane Purnell, at spurn1@eq.edu.au for more information.

All Instrumental students will have a lesson with our instrumental staff:

  • Mr Higgins – Percussion (Thursday)
  • Ms Slater – Strings (Wednesday and Thursday)
  • Ms Cleary - Woodwind, (Tuesday and Friday)
  • Mr Purnell - Brass, Woodwind, Percussion (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday)
  • Ms Wolfe – Woodwind (Monday)

Education Queensland provides lessons for Brass, Percussion, Strings and Woodwind instruments.  Students are also welcome to join the Junior Choir (Years 7-9) or Senior Choir (10-12) at any time: Junior Choir rehearsals are on Thursday mornings from 7.45am in P1 classroom, and Senior Choir also rehearses on Thursday mornings from 7.30am in P2. If interested in choir please contact Mrs Purnell (Senior) rmcdo6@eq.edu.au and Mrs McDuff (Junior) McDuffl@eq.edu.au.

Students who play or would like to play guitar or have singing lessons please contact the following staff about the user pay program. Aaron Andrews – aaron.tuition@gmail.com (guitar teacher), and Anita Taylor – aneedasoundcheck@gmail.com (singing teacher).

Extra-Curricular Activities:

We welcome new students to join the broad range of extra-curricular Arts activities on offer, in addition to the numerous music ensembles offered by the Instrumental Music Program.  We are pleased to offer a Junior Art Club, Junior Drama Club, Tech Crew (Sound, Lighting, Photography), Musical Theatre Troupe, numerous Dance Teams, Senior Acting Extension, Rock School and a Senior Film Club. These groups are advertised in Daymap and on Parades at the beginning of each year and have already made a start for 2024 – we look forward to seeing the great work they produce at events throughout the year!  Please see the teachers in P block staffroom for further information about joining these activities, or email mcduffl@eq.edu.au.

Parent Support Group for Creative Arts:

Cleveland District State High School has a long and proud tradition in the Arts.   We would not be able to present events of such quality without the support of our parent/guardian community.  Our parents and guardians play an invaluable role in many ways:

  • Fundraising
  • Supporting our events
  • Volunteering special skills (baking, sewing/dressmaking, etc.)

If you are interested in helping out, we would like you to consider joining our Creative Arts Support Team (CAST).  We will meet on an ad hoc basis, but you will be added to an email group which is a vital cog in the successful running of our events and programs this year.

If you would like to be part of this awesome group, please email our teacher aide Gail Bellas on gbell78@eq.edu.au.

Creative Arts in the Classroom:

Year 7 Music Extension:

Our new Year 7 Music Extension students have begun their Creative Arts studies by exploring identity through Visual Art techniques, and learning how to work together as a large music ensemble – and they are already sounding fabulous.  This class will continue working together as an ensemble throughout the year and will be presenting their performance work at our ‘Concert on the Green’ in Term 2, and at a Year 7 & 8 Music Extension Showcase at the end of the year – we look forward to hearing the beautiful music they make together!

Photo: Year 7 Music Extension Orchestra

Year 9 Art

In Year 9 Visual Art in Practice our students are studying a unit called “Agents of Change”.  Students have created beautiful zentangle art exploring the elements of line and pattern, whilst researching the Eucalyptus tree and its needs/use within Australian flora and fauna.   In Year 9 General Art, the students have been introduced to shading techniques using 2B, 4B and 6B pencils, via a Checkerboard activity. Their unit is called “Our Changing Coastline” where we are looking closely at marine life and the Great Barrier Reef.  The detail in their artwork is very impressive - keep up the great work Year 9s!

Year 10 and 11 Media Arts

Year 10 and 11 Media have started the year with animation.  So far, the students have created bizarre moving creatures made up of weird and wonderful objects, have learned to animate over live footage, and have learned how to incorporate sound and layering to great effect in their animations. Looks like they are having lots of fun!

Year 12 Music and Music Extension

Our Year 12 classroom music students have hit the ground running, with their first concert coming up on March 22.  This concert will take place in Performance Space from 6pm, and will feature the talents of our Music Extension, IB Music and ATAR Music students.  All are welcome!  You will be treated to a wonderful show!

Student Point of View:

Our Creative Arts Ambassadors were asked to provide advice for our new Year 7 students who are just embarking on their high school journeys.

Emi: As a Creative Arts Ambassador, I get to experience everything. I am lucky enough to be a part of a little bit of the whole Creative Arts department and make it even better for all of you. But when I was in Year 7, I wasn’t part of everything. I had bands, and choir, and that was it. And I loved it, but I wanted to do more. Only, I was scared to try.

Looking back, I wish I had tried earlier. Because even if you aren’t the best, you’re doing it. You’re being a part of what you love for as long as possible. And you can get better at what you love. Whether you like school or not, you can’t deny that it makes it way easier to get involved in Creative Arts opportunities. As a Year 9, I’m realising that the opportunities school offers me aren’t once-in-a-lifetime, but don’t come about often, especially thinking on a global scale. And as a Year 9, with less years of school left than I think, I’m taking up these chances to do more of what I want to do.

My advice to everyone is this: be nervous, but don’t be scared. Take opportunities as they come. If you don’t like it, nothing’s stopping you from leaving. But nothing is stopping you from starting, either.

Ellie: Creative Arts was always my best class – the one that I would look forward to the most. In Year 7 and 8, you get so much out of the Creative Arts classes, I think one regret I’d have is not making the most out of it. The teachers are amazing, and I made a lot of friends in Creative Arts, which I ended up becoming really close with. My message to you is to make the most of it, because by the time it’s finished, you’ll be glad you did.

Kobi: As a former grade 7 my best advice that I was given is to try. Everything. School isn't too hard just yet, so you can sacrifice a lunchtime or two to have a go at that dance rehearsal or to try out drumming, plus with this you'll find like-minded people, which is how I found most of my friends to this day. So please, give everything you see a go even if it’s not in the Creative Arts - just have fun with your time here.

Cody: Hello Year 7’s! As you embark on your journey in the Creative Arts, remember that creativity knows no bounds. Embrace your unique talents, explore different forms of expression, and never be afraid to think outside the box. This is your time to shine and make your mark in the world of art. There will be highs and lows along the way, but just know that there are people around you who are more than happy to lend a helping hand.

Japan Tour 2023

Japan Tour 2023

The 2023 Japan Tour group travelled for 2 weeks across Honshu and Kyushu Islands. Students enjoyed a full schedule starting with 4 nights in Kani, our sister city, located near Nagoya, in Gifu Prefecture. Students were warmly welcomed at a full school ceremony and participated in many school activities and lessons. We met the Mayor of Kani City, Mr Tomida, exchanged gifts and reflected on the importance and strength of our sister city and school relations, and how we have maintained our relationship despite the impact of Covid19. The Kani City Council also assisted in providing our students an opportunity to experience the local sights of the Hana Festa Gardens, Kani Museum, participate in green tea ceremony and try on traditional armour.  We also visited one of the 6 largest castles in Japan, Inuyama Castle. The view from the top of the castle was spectacular.

The tour then continued to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Fukuoka and Nagasaki. Students visited Kyoto’s famous Kinkakuji and Kiyomizudera temples and Nara’s Deer Park and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. The excitement of Osaka and Universal Studios Japan did not disappoint. We then continued our bullet train route to Fukuoka, Kyushu Island where some great shopping and food was enjoyed.  Finally, our day tour to Nagasaki included visiting the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, Nagasaki Peace Park, Oura Church and Glover Garden.  While the Museum was confronting for some, it was a valuable experience for this generation to observe both the personal and global impact of war. Students thoroughly enjoyed the tour and were excellent ambassadors of both CDSHS and Australia.  This authentic experience has broadened the students’ global perspectives, intercultural understanding and provided that extra little bit of confidence and motivation in developing and improving their Japanese language skills and cultural understanding. Many fabulous memories and a trip to remember forever.

Expressions of interest (EOI) for the 2024 Japan Tour are now open to Year 9,10 and 11 Japanese studying students.  Please see Ms Venamore, Languages HOD for an EOI form.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisations

The Immunisation program returns to school this year for year 7 and 10. Year 7 will receive one dose on 20 May and Year 10s will receive two doses, one on 18 March and the second on 22 July.

In 2024 our school vaccination provider, Logan City Council, is moving to a simple digital system for our School Immunisation Program.

This online system, will replace the paper consent card system previously used. We’ll capture a digital profile and consent for all visits for the year.

This consent can be withdrawn by the parents/guardians at any time.

For more information about Year 7 & 10 SIP, go to School Immunisation Program – Logan City Council

Cleveland High Interhouse Swimming Carnival

The Cleveland District State High School interhouse swimming carnival was held on Monday 5th February at the Cleveland Aquatic Centre. This day provides an opportunity for competitive swimmers to push for selection in the CDSHS Swim Team and to compete for Age Championships, and it also provides an opportunity for non-competitive swimmers to participate in various events that are aimed at enjoyment and participation, rather than competing. Student attendance was very high and the shade shelters that were borrowed from local politicians and placed on the grass embankment around the south west corner of the pool were immediately used as the CDSHS student body quickly filled the permanent shade structures at the Cleveland Pool.

The four major events for the day included the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breast stroke and 50m butterfly events. Swimmers in the competitive races for these events all recorded times that contributed to Age Championship calculations. There were several outstanding performances on the day, including the breaking of 11 CDSHS swimming records.

The 2024 CDSHS Swimming Age Champions were:

These Age Champions will make up the bulk of the CDSHS swim team which is competing at the Bayside District Swimming Carnival on Thursday 15th February at the Chandler Aquatic Centre. Congratulations to Moreton House, who were crowned the Champion House for the day. Thank you to Mr Pryde and Mrs McKell for leading the organisation of the CDSHS Interhouse Swimming Carnival – it was a great day!

Student Spotlight - Amelia Hughes

Amelia Hughes a Year 7 student, was recently recognised by the Courier Mail as one of South East Queensland's most inspirational under 25's. Amelia won the Governor's Creative Writing competition for Girl Guides in Queensland for her age group, writing on the topic: "Exploring What makes Queensland Great".

Amelia served on the Student Council for two years whilst attending Thornlands State School and is now part of the Academic Excellence program at Cleveland District State High School where she commenced this year.

Recently Amelia met with our Executive Principal, Mr McKeown who congratulated Amelia on her achievement. We look forward to seeing where Amelia’s creative writing abilities take her as she journeys through her high school years. Well done Amelia!

Chapliancy update

Hi from our Chappies!

We are Neale Collier and Bella Wilson, the Cleveland High School Chaplains! Our main role as a Chaplain (or Chappy as we’re better known) is to support students, parents and staff with any physical, social, emotional or spiritual needs they might have. We are open to chat about all issues, big or small, and where necessary suggest other suitable people who might be able to help. We also run groups and activities that add positively to the Cleveland High experience.

Our Drop-in Centre, located in C-Block, is open every break. It is a safe place where students can chill, play games, get a slice of toast or just hang out and chat. The centre is a hive of activities, many organised by our amazing Student Chaplaincy Committee.

A big part of our Chaplaincy work is encouraging global citizenship by supporting our Sister School in Vanuatu, Pango Centre School, as well as installing libraries in impoverished remote schools with The Library Project Vanuatu. We have three special focuses for this term:

  1. Library Creation Weekend, 8th - 9th March

Please come and be part of our biggest volunteer event of the year! We will be taking many thousands of donated books and turning them into 16-18 small school libraries. Each of these has been requested by a small village school in a remote location in Vanuatu. Later this year, the Cleveland High Vanuatu Mission Team will be installing some of these libraries as part of their trip. Please see the attached flyer for details or give us a call at school if you have questions.

  1. Election Bake Sale, 16th March

We will be raising much needed funds for our Vanuatu Team through a Bake Sale on Election Day. We will be outside the voting station at the Cleveland Assembly Hall. To be a success, we are appealing for volunteer bakers to donate $2 portioned items to the sale. A full set of instructions regarding packaging are available for students to collect, or we can email details to you if you contact us.

  1. Gift Boxes

Our Vanuatu Team are inviting staff and students to pack a gift box for a child in the school that will be hosting them on their trip. The aim is to collect enough boxes so that no child is left out. A ‘shopping list’ and the empty boxes are available at the Chaplaincy Room. An exciting aspect of our boxes is that after they have been delivered, you will be given a photo of the child receiving it.

We are able to offer a full week service to Cleveland High due to the wonderful support and donations of the P&C, community donors and the efforts of volunteers. If you are interest in donating, volunteering or assisting us in any other way, please don’t hesitate to ring us at the school.

We look forward to supporting our whole school community in 2024!

Neale and Bella

Seeking Research Participants

Dear parent / guardian / carer,

My name is Ana Radovic, and I am conducting a research project entitled A Transformative Study of Culturally Diverse and Migrant Youth Perspectives and Experiences of Citizenship and (Global) Citizenship Education, as a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice, Queensland University of Technology (QUT). This study explores the perspectives and lived experiences of citizenship and Citizenship Education (CE)/ Global Citizenship Education (GCE) among culturally diverse and migrant youth.

I would like to invite young people (currently aged between 15-17), who identify as belonging to a culturally diverse and migrant background, who were born outside of Australia, and are currently enrolled or have completed a minimum of one term in an Australian school, to participate in my research.

The participation will involve completing a short online questionnaire and participating in an audio recorded face-to-face (at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane), or online interview (via Zoom).

Please note that participation in the interview is possible face-to-face at QUT only if the research participants live in Brisbane or the surrounding areas, and prefer to attend in person. Transport costs are not covered or reimbursed.

During the interview, the participants will be asked about their experiences of citizenship and CE/ GCE in Australia. The online questionnaire will take approximately 5 minutes to complete, and the interview will take up to 60 minutes. In addition, a Feedback Form will be completed at the end of the interview.

Please view the Interview Participant Information Sheet (link provided below) that provides further information about participating in the project. If your child meets eligibility criteria outlined in the Information Sheet, and they wish to participate, they should complete, and sign the online Interview Participant Consent Form

https://qsurvey.qut.edu.au/jfe/form/SV_9REBgsIqua4RQDY at your earliest convenience.

Please note that the Consent Form should be completed and signed by your child, with your verbal consent.

If you have any questions, and would like to learn more about the study, please contact me via email ana.radovic@hdr.qut.edu.au.

Please note that this study has been approved by the QUT Human Research Ethics Committee (approval number 7096).

The 2023 Executive Committee was re-elected, so we are pleased to announce that Louise Pack resumes the role of President for 2024 with Rivca Swinson as Vice President, Deborah Mitchell as Secretary and Rebecca Wehr as Treasurer. Members of the Executive Committee work tirelessly to provide support to the school, students and staff and we thank them for volunteering their time to continue this support this year.

The next general P&C Meeting will be held in the Innovation Centre F9 - F10 located behind the language block on 21st May 2024 at 7pm. Entry is via Russell Street. New members always welcome.

Tuckshop

The Tuckshop is back into full swing and super busy every day feeding hungry students. A new staff member started this year to help the team keep up with demand.

Remember that when you order through Flexischools, it means that your student will always get what they want and won’t miss out and they won’t have to wait long to pick up their order. Order before 8.30am on the day to make sure the order is received.

Uniform Shop

Welcome to Term 1 2024 Term 1 started off busy with our Year 7 intake and International students joining us as well as quite a few new students across other grades. Once again, we would like to thank all the parents and students for their patience during our busy times.

Mon 8am - 10.30am

Tue 8am – 10.30am

Students are always welcome to come in on their own, we know they can be nervous about doing this, but we are here to help them as much as we can.

Grey Socks – We are currently out of stock of all sizes. They will be back in stock early March. We will post on the school Facebook page and they will be back on Flexischools as soon as they arrive.

Students are welcome to come and pick up the orders. Please note that it can take about 24 hours for us to receive the order for processing and collection. Remember too that if you have placed an order over the past few terms, please double check whether they have been collected.

Large $$ notes – Please don’t send large notes with students if possible. We carry a very small float and giving change can be difficult if we get several $50 or $100 notes.

Refunds & Exchanges – We are happy to exchange sizes should they not be correct, however, please make sure that the labels are not pulled off and items for exchange are not worn or washed.  We adhere to QLD fair trade laws regarding refunds.

NAPLAN Online - Term 1, Weeks 8 & 9

As per our previous email to parents, NAPLAN Online will take place at scheduled times during weeks 8 and 9 this term. Regular classes will be taking place at all other times, with students expected to attend as normal.

Students are not expected to study for NAPLAN, as it is a point-in-time test for literacy and numeracy skills already learnt. The tailored (or adaptive) testing is offered online, where the test presents questions which are more or less difficult depending on the student's responses, ensures that all students can easily engage with the test.

Parents and students may find it useful to look at the types of tests and questions on the Public Demonstration Site by clicking the link below.

If you have any questions or require further information, please contact Deputy Principal James Elcock, on jelco4@eq.edu.au.

Library News

Welcome to the CDSHS Library!

Opening hours in 2024

Monday – 8am to 4pm

Tuesday – 8am to 4pm (Homework Club from 2.45pm to 4pm)

Wednesday – 8am to 3pm

Thursday – 8am to 4pm (Homework Club from 2.45pm to 4pm)

Friday – 8am to 3pm

The library is a marvellous multi-functional space where students will find bookshelves full of contemporary and classic fiction, a comfortable reading area, a printing area for students to utilise and a quiet study area to develop senior student study skills. We celebrate the pure joy of reading and challenge our students to be curious and inquisitive lifelong readers.

We also have access to online books through ePlatform. Your student can access digital books as well as research databases through our Oliver app which can be found on the Student SharePoint page.

One of the ways our library encourages reading is through our displays. Throughout the year we recommend and exhibit the various genres in our library collection. Last week we celebrated Love Your Library week and promoted our Romance genre. Students completed various craft activities during their break time. Currently, we are running a competition in which students can design a poster or write a short story of 300 to 600 words in length centred around the year’s Love Your Library theme ‘Our Heart Our Stories’. Entries close 29th February.

LOST PROPERTY: If your student has lost property, please advise them to come to the library.

We look forward to welcoming your student to the CDSHS Library in 2024.

Second Hand Rugby League Boots

A member of our community, Sandra McKenzie has approached our school on behalf of the John Moriarty Foundation seeking donations of second hand rugby/football boots to give to the children of Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory. Sandra was recently featured in the Redland City News and would be grateful for the donation of secondhand boots to help aboriginal children in the Barkley Region which covers an area of approximately 322,000 square kilometres.

If you would like to donate to this charity, please contact Sandra McKenzie at kidsfooty-boots@gmail.com.
